Some Walking Dead Humor

From my admittedly limited viewing, this is what I get out of it.

Some Walking Dead Humor

Having nothing better to do and presently suffering from creative bankruptcy, I decided to look up and share some stuff I found on a show I pretty much dislike. Reasons for which I will give later this week. For now ... Enjoy ...

This pre-dated Night of the Living Dead by a couple years.

Hmmm ... If it was like this I might watch it. Then again ... maybe not.

I like late '30s/early '40s period pieces with late '40s/early '50s cars. I also have
fun spotting vapor trails in westerns too. Then there's the one where one of the
three kings is seen wearing a wrist watch!

I always liked Christopher Walken. Even as Max Schreck.

I also like those films where the "last man on earth" keeps running into people.

That's it for the moment. Stay tuned Friday when I actually vent a little on the show itself.

Sees ya' ...

Of Dr. Faustus & Color TVs

For a couple summers in the late 60s, Dad rented a cabin in western Kentucky (The "Land Between the Lakes" area.) where we'd spend a weeks' vacation. Touring the sites & museums & lots & LOTS of swimming.

The second year, Dad was able to get the resort staff to replace the black & white TV that came with the cabin with a color set. Now it may not seem so important today, but back then, color TV was still a big deal ..... & expensive.

It was on our second day the color set arrived. Physically it was smaller than the b & w it replaced. As Mom & baby sister were out for a walk, Dad told us kids not to tell them & see if they'd notice.

Later the set's on & finally Mom took note. When baby sister made no comment, she was asked if there was any difference.

      "It's little-er", she replied.

She noticed the sets' size but not the picture. We thought that cute.

Later that week, the Richard Burton/Liz Taylor flick "Doctor Faustus" was aired (I think it was ABC.) We sat in rapt attention, not because it was scary as it was interesting (Didn't think of it as a play. I thought it was going to be a horror movie.). In it, Liz Taylor played the principle female parts & ultimately dragged Dick to "heck & gone". All right, HELL!

Later on the way home, to help pass the time, we speculated as to where Satan was in that flick. Baby sister said maybe Taylor was.

"You could be right Sheila," was Dads' reply.

I guess the observation about the TVs' size was due to "lateral thinking".

Who Are You Little Girl? The Judgement of Rod Serling

Flashback to the mid-70s. Had recently escaped from (Insert name of a large, ossified, religious denomination of your choice here.) & joined a much smaller fundamentalist bunch (I liked the "dynamics" & yes, found out what salvation is when you take away the ritual & "extraciricular" non-doctrine.). Spiritually, I found things to be much simpler & better. Even in "Eden" however, a "snake" or two can be found & I encountered one hissing  away one night at a youth meeting.

A few days before, Rod Serling died of a heart attack during surgery. Serling was a producer/writer of several movies & TV shows, one of which was The Twilight Zone, a big favorite of mine.

Some in this little congregation I attended looked down on such shows as Zone (Nanny & the Professor, Bewitched, etc.). One was an otherwise nice young lady who snarkingly "commented" on as to where Mr. Serling might be spending eternity. I wish I was a little more knowlegable of Mr. Serling, The Twilight Zone & of "theology" at the time. An interesting discussion might have taken place.

Who are you little girl? And who do you think you are? Your'e in no position to judge this man & know next to nothing about him. All you do know is what you've seen on that "satanic" TV show of his. And what were you doing watching it if it's so bad? (I'm reminded of a pastor commenting on how miserable Vincent Price must have been due to his "reputation" for the macabre. From what I read over the years "Uncle Vince" had a blast! So much for the speculations of the "Godly".)

Rodman Edward Serling (1924-1975, aged 50). Native of Cayuga County/Rochester, NY (I'm originally from the Chemung County/Elmira area.). World War ll combat vet, wounded, saw more than he cared to. It's thought to have affected him later in life. Workaholic, heavy smoker. Wrote/produced some of the greatest TV shows & movies ever (Requiem For A Heavyweight & Patterns are must sees.) , Twilight Zone included.

I doubt Zone episodes were intended to be "satanic". Some, (One For the Angels, Nothing In the Dark, & A Nice Place to Visit) could be considered angelic. "Diabolic" or "heavenly", each ep had something thoughtful if not positive in it. I don't think the show was engineered to steer folks toward the devil.

Only God is the true & fair judge of any & all. For all you know young lady, Mr. Serling is up there "doing TV". Maybe you should be more concerned with working out your own salvation (Phillipians 2:12) instead of condemning others.

To Grandmothers' House We Go

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!

                                        To Grandmothers' House We Go

I hated going to my grandparents. Being there was OK, but the trip itself? Eight hours from Mt. Vernon, Ohio to Elmira, NY & Dad loved his air conditioning & cigars. (In the dead of August we're wearing sweaters!) It was great when we stopped. We'd all pile out of the wagon to warm up & clear our sinuses.

The actual visit to Grandma & Papas' was great. Visiting relatives & getting away with what we otherwise couldn't.

      "Hey, Grandma! Wadya get me!?"

"Why hon, I have it right here."

We were steeped in materialism at an early age.

Yeah, there were things to look forward to in out bi-annual visits. One of which was "different TV". When we left for central Ohio in '61 there were only two TV stations in Elmira. We didn't know about ABC Network until we got to Mt. Vernon.

While Dad was building a new life for us in the mid-west, Grandpa aquired the services of this new fangled tech. called Cable Television. I got aquainted with it on subsequent visits back to New York state.

Eleven (Count em!) WHOLE channels (2 through 12. 13, the "meter channel" didn't count.) with something different on each (Unlike hundreds today with NOTHING on.). Back then, TV stations did a lot of their own programming & weren't as dependant on networks. Much of their production, graphics, & shows were either produced locally or "in house".

Grandpa got cable so he could take in Yankees & Mets games on the New York City independants (WPIX et al). When there, I found a much better use for it: Movies & cartoons! (Including some of those "different" cartoons that I later learned were made in Japan.)

4, 6, & 10 (WLWC/WCMH, WTVN/WSYX, WBNS) in central Ohio were OK as far as they went but they did have their drawbacks. Almost no sci-fi or horror flicks were ever shown during the day. 10s' Chiller Theater/Armchair Theater reserved that for Friday nights in the 60s through the 90s. 6s Terror In the Night/Seymour Presents on Saturday nights in the 70s. 4 showed quite a lot on weekend afternoons during the '81 baseball strike.

Anime in central Ohio was next to nonexistant. 10 had Marine Boy/Undersea Boy Marine in the mid 60s on Saturday morning & 6 had Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go in the early 70s weekday afternoons. Aside from the rare movie (Alakazam the Great, Panda & the Magic Serpent, & Jack & the Witch) that was about it here until Sandy Frank came up with Battle of the Planets/Science Ninja Team Gatchaman in the mid 70s.

NYC TV via cable? Wow! Sci-fi/horror flicks (As these stations rented different movie "packages" I got to see a lot of flicks I couldn't see at home.) every afternoon in the summer & seemingly wall to wall anime on at least two stations (WPIX ch 11, & I think WNEW ch5.) No one called it "anime" back then. To me, they were those "wierd cartoons we can't 'pick up' back home."

The "line ups" included 8th Man/8 Man, The Amazing Three/Wonder 3, Astro Boy/Mighty Atom, Gigantor/Tetsujin 28-go among others. "Stone age" anime of the 60s. Mostly black & white, with very minimal animation. Peter Fernandez, Corinne Orr & crew scripted/dubbed the English versions for just about all of them (They also did a LOT of dubs for Italian & Japanese films.) As these were edited down for US audiences, the results were pretty much "kid stuff". Being a kid, that didn't matter much to me at the time. They were still quite different enough for me to appreciate their "otherness".

Cable finally came to Mt. Vernon in the 70s but we couldn't get it. We lived about a mile & a half out of town & WMVO (1300 AM, 93.7 FM) who ran the franchise, wouldn't go beyond the city limits. Something about it not being profitable enough. I figured it was part of the then ongoing conspiracy to keep me from watching anything kool. How I rankled about what I was missing out on as I would look over the TV Guide & newspaper listings (I envied the kids in New York City!). There were plenty of people living out our way, but as they knew I was out there too, well .....
