Gate: An Anime Review With Reservations

L-R: Tuka Luna Marceau, Youji Itami, Lelei La Lelena and Rory Mercury.

Gate: An Anime Review With Reservations

Caught wind of this on You Tube and decided to give it a go on Crunchityroll. And ... well ... some good ... some ... "bad".

First ... the plot:

A portal or gate (Hence the title.) materializes in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. Out pours a midieval/Roman style fantasy army complete with goblins, freaks and flying dragons that attacks the people in the streets. The JSDF is called in, the police rally and the invaders are destroyed, the remainder either driven back beyond the gate or captured.

The Japanese government sends an expeditionary force to the now designated Special Region to retaliate and check things out for possible exploitation.

The show itself is about the (mis)adventures of Youji Itami and his unit in the Special Region. A slacker, otaku, and JSDF member (Who was off duty that day for a doujinshi convention.) who "Forrest Gumped" his way through the ranks.

Due to his fast thinking on that day drawing some blood and saving countless lives, he is promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to a recon team. The purpose of the team is of course recon but also "hearts and minds" with the locals.

Thus two seasons worth of "culture shock" on the part of both sides.

The pluses:

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THAT ... EXECRABLE ... STEINS' GATE. Which was a convoluted mess with a LOUD annoying jerk as lead character.

I don't usually go in for fantasy shows. The "magic" ends up as an overused plot device and degenerates into a sentai fighting show like Dragonball Z or Fullmetal Alchemist. So far it's been kept to a minimum. As this is also "sticks and stones" vs. modern military with magic taking a distant back seat, I rather liked it.

The one mage gets a basic chemistry book and uses the knowledge gained in supplementing her sorcery. A nice touch. She also buys a laptop and related software while on a diplomatic trip to Tokyo as an aid to her research.

The minuses:

The seemingly out of place goth lolita demi-goddess Rory Mercury character comes across like some "deus ex machina". Invincible "Mary Sue" types I find uninteresting.

Some of the action scenes, particularly the ones with Rory Mercury, are choppily edited. No sooner an image barely registers, it switches to another. Makes for an exercise in eyestrain, motion sickness and aggravation. So far this hasn't been done too much

This is, to me, one of those "Japan vs. the west" kind of shows. Sorta' kinda' like The Silent Service, Zipang or Starship Operators. This should come as no surprise as the original mangas' creator is a right winger.

The chief bad guys appear as blond and overbearing (Including the U.S. President. Donald Trump anyone?). Other blondes as cute and at times, ditzy (ex.: Tuka the elf babe.).

Cute critters show up (Cat girls, bunny babes, etc.). In a later episode so does a Tinkerbelle-like fairy (Thankfully for only a moment.). So far as I've seen, the cute isn't laid on too thick. The doujinshi goes slightly more in depth in passing about the empire discriminating against the elves, animal people and goblins. Yeah ... I give a pass on the pointy eared folk and cat babes, but goblins? ... No way! Yeah ... I discriminate ... And don't feel guilty at all about it.

It should be noted that Japan is, in spite of the assimilation of western tech and concepts/ideas, still a quite insular and institutionally racist country. Nothing wrong in that. After all ... It's what keeps Japan ... well ... Japan.

The infatuation and "marriage proposal" of an UNDERAGE princess with Japans' ambassador comes across as blatantly creepy. The ambassador, to his credit, thinks the better of it and the age of consent laws in Japan are cited. In spite of what any of you hentai fans who might be reading this may believe, age of consent laws over in Japan are brutally strict and woe to those caught indulging who shouldn't.

The emperors' daughter and her entourage, on a visit to Tokyo for negotiations become infatuated with fag comics, mistaking that mistake for high art. Yaoi ... Isn't that the sound they make when they ... never mind.

The U.S., Russia and China get involved hoping to one day gain access to the Special Region thus assassination attempts, blackmail and intrigue resulting.

As much as I like the shows' original premise of "sticks 'n stones" vs modern age, the imagery of an Asian army pushing around what appears to be a European culture doesn't sit well with me. Especially since that Asian military is using weapons that, for the most part, were designed and made by European people. It is a fantasy many Japanese have harbored (And even tried to fulfill from 1905 to 1945.) since Perry surprised them in 1853. Gate could be viewed as a "Perry in reverse".

As an aside, I see nothing wrong in Japan doubling the size of their present military AND PAYING FOR IT THEMSELVES. The Second World War has long been over. While Japan (And South Korea for that matter.) is part of the Chinese/Confucian "nexus", the hostility of one for the other, at present, keeps "blood calling to blood" in check. Anything short of nukes and Eva units I'm all for them having. :)

Summation:

Am reading the manga online at kissmanga.com and have every intention of buying the discs when Sentai Filmworks sells it here.

All the same, I'll be watching/enjoying it somewhat "tongue in brain" so to speak.

Relax Itami! At 900+ she's of legal age. All the same ... RUN!

Girls und Panzer ... FINALLY!

My Christmas present to myself FINALLY arrived on the day after: The Uninvited, a ghost story from 1944 starring Ray Milland, and the anime series Girls und Panzer. And something of a mixed bag it is.

Particularly Girls und Panzer. I had been waiting over a year to have this one in my hot little hands. I was initially attracted to this series as I'm something of a history buff and was always into the vehicles of World War II. The silly premise of "Tankery" (Tinkery, tankery, tock, the Maus ran up the clock ... Good Grief! Call it Sensha-do or Panzerfahren. Anything but THAT!) as part of a schools' athletic program screams ANIME(!) all the way. Having watched the show (Twice!) on Crunchyroll and viewed clips on You Tube countless times, I was ready for Sentai Filmworks to come out with the English dub here.

I'm somewhat disappointed with the English dub. Except for some of the minor characters, I didn't think the voices matched the characters well (Though I thought Hilary Haag, Yui in Angel Beats, was pretty good as Katyusha.). The "old pros" in the cast, (Monica Rial, Brittney Karbowski, Luci Christian, Tiffany Grant etc.) were definitely under used.

Riko "Erwin" Matsumoto: One of the series'
more interesting character designs

In Angel Beats, Sentai avoided substituting the original Japanese singing (Girldemo performances and the graduation song.) with English renditions. Here they didn't. The Anko dance singing in episode 9, sounded half hearted and clumsy as did the "snow march". The substitution of the Pravda girls singing the Katyusha in episode 8 with some kind of Russian "folk polka" music (I guess some copyright issues or something were involved.) didn't help the show either.

Being an old white guy who speaks English, I'm usually all for English dubs. In this case though, the original Japanese is far superior and I'll watch it in that in the future.

All in all I'm glad I now have this series on my shelf. Due to the "poor" English dub, I'm even gladder I got this at a reduced price through Deep Discount DVD (By way of Amazon.).

twice the size they are. Makes the Panzer 4 look like an absolute monster!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: NOT the Usual Fluff

What I originally thought to be kiddy tripe turns out to be an interesting show.
L-R: Kyubey (on shoulder) with magical girls Madoka Kaname,
Sayaka Miki, Mami Tomoe, Kyoko Sakura, & Homura Akemi.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: NOT the Usual Fluff

by

Jay Agan

Normally I steer clear of the magical girl sub-genre. That sachariny, cutesy-patootsie garbage makes me beyond ill. I had fun in the 90s making fun of the insipid Sailor Moon show on Fox Kids  on my days off but that's about it.

I scoffed when an aquaintance suggested Puella Magi Madoka Magica to me (Another has been trying to get me to watch ... gasp! ... My Little Pony, Friendship Is Magic! That's another gory story entirely ... ). After months of on/off again passive derision & just plain avoidance I fell across the Wikipedia review & episode guide & later decided to give it a try when I "discovered" Crunchityroll.

Gotta admit. This ain't the usual cup o' bubbly barf you'd expect.

Take:

Sailor Moon ... Hell Girl ... Neon Genesis/End of Evangelion ... Bedazzled ... Wishmaster ... Throw in a bit of Peter Max & Terry Gilliam ... And you have ...

A semi-deep, non-superficial tale of young ladies making Faustian bargains with what at first appears to be a benevolent spirit but in reality a satanic manipulator & user. Why satanic? One episode has a scene reminiscent of Christs' temptation wherein the "demonic" Kyubey or "Incubator" tries to cajole the protagonist Madoka into "drinking the Kool-Aid". Promising wonderful things if only she'd give in.

The arrangement seems wonderful at first: Become a "magical girl" trope in order to fight evil & your one fondest wish will be granted. Such a deal! Over the course of several episodes Kyubey gradually reveals the rest of the contract as nothing more than a scam to use selected humans as "energy sources" for his races' use. Oh yeah. It's also shown that after time, the ultimate fate of all magical girls, in spite of steps taken to prevent, is to gradually sink into a state of despair & trans-form into "witches", the very enemies they're fighting, which are also being used for the same purpose.

By the way ... Unlike most of those insipid "magical girl" shows, one can get killed in the course of fighting evil ... Painfully so.

In short, one is sucked into a sick, little game manipulated by the Incubators for their own ends.

Samuel Goldwyn once said: "A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on."

Whenever making agreements/covenants with seemingly benevolent entities (Especially the cute, puppy/kitty looking kind!) be sure you get it in writing & have your lawyer go over the fine print FIRST. Otherwise ... NO DEAL!

What I thought to be a kool touch was the Homura characters' supplementing her powers
with conventional weapons. Using her "time stopping" ability, Colt .45s, a Desert Eagle
& a shotgun are taken from the locker room of a local Yakusa hangout. She's later seen
making & using pipe bombs!

A couple of spoilers: Madoka, the main protagonist, doesn't become a magical girl until the last of the twelve episode series (This may seem aggravating at first but the pay-off is worth it!). When she does, she "folds the situation in on itself". Watch & see.

Too bad Aniplex doesn't know how to  market anime very well, otherwise I'll just have to wait a good looooong while for it to come out in a box set ... On Amazon ... Sale price ... USED! This releasing a series in overpriced 3 to 4 episode dribs n' drabs just doesn't cut it with me. I WILL get this one when conditions are right.

Girls und Panzer/Kellys' Heroes

Don't know who did this but I like it! L-R: Clint "Kelly" Eastwood,
Kay/Kei, Miho Nishizumi, & Donald "Oddball" Sutherland.

Girls und Panzer/Kellys' Heroes

Just finished Girls und Panzer on Crunchity Roll. At least what there is of it. Seems they delayed broadcast of the last two episodes in Japan until March. Guess they're trying to work out a plausable ending. No matter how it turns out, I WILL get this when it's released in a box set.

I'll admit, if it wasn't for the AFVs & the tank battles I wouldn't have given it even a passing glance. As an amateur (very) historian & a past wargamer, the WWll trappings had me engrossed in the show.

Without the unique premise (Tank warfare as part of a schools' martial arts program.) it's just another cutesy/moe' high school girl anime with all the tropes/stereotypes/situations common to countless others of its kind. Usually with a reluctant young lady finding her identity through teamwork & doing her best. We've seen it all before.

I do like the two Kellys' Heroes references. In episode 05, one of the girls infiltrates the American teams' school to get the lowdown on their strategy for an upcoming match (An obvious WWll allegory.). When challenged to identify herself, she replies as "Oddball, Sargeant third class" in reference to Donald Sutherlands' character in the movie. In episode 10, the freshman team (Lee/Grant tank.) are seen viewing Kellys' Heroes during a pre-match gathering. They weep openly when the Tiger gets hit from behind as did I ... ahem ... Actually I ... I didn't. No! Really! ... I didn't! ... Honest!
