There All Along
A Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya/Angel Beats Crossover Fanfiction
by
C V Ford
This story picks up in the first episode scene where Otonashi is introduced to the members of the Battlefront after reviving from being clobbered by the mallet trap.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
... The girl gestured with an index finger. "... Now listen carefully 'cause this is important:
"In our previous world, death didn't care. It went after people randomly & indiscriminately. It's not like we were actually able to defy it ... But here in this world, it's a whole different ball game. We can exist as long as we're resisting Angel ... We're fighting back."
"But wait ... Wait a sec," the newcomer intevened. "When all's said & done, what then? What are you trying to accomplish?"
"Our goal is to take out Angel once & for all." The speaker declared. "Once we do that, this world belongs to us."
"Huh?"
"You're new here so it's no surprise you're a bit confused ... Heighten your sense of adaptability & accept things as they are."
"Accept things ... ," the young man mulled it over, "& then fight ... against this ... Angel."
"That's right ... Stand with us," the speaker extended her hand.
The newcomer paused, "uh-"
The other nine in the room looked on anxiously as the young man hesitantly reached to recieve.
The sudden commotion of a roughly thrown open office door drew everyones' attention to a furious apparition twirling a halberd above his head.
"Hold on a minute!"
The mallet trap sprang for the second time in as many hours, sending the hostile one flying.
"Moooron!" someone exclaimed facepalming.
"Dumbass fell for his own trap," said another looking on.
Looking over the shoulders of three others at the window staring at a broken body three stories below, the stranger queried, "that's ... what happened to me?"
Everyone turned their eyes back to the interrogator as she, seemingly unconcerned, continued.
"You need a password to enter Safe & Sound. This office is our anti-Angel strategy headquarters. It's the only safe place where we can talk & make plans."
"Uh ... Could you ... give me some time to think about this?"
"'Sure I can ... Anywhere but here though."
"Eh ... err ... hnn ..." He hesitated. It wasn't as if he had anyone/where else to turn to. A hostile 'Angel' roaming about. A seemingly ineffective school faculty/organisation. This bunch looked to be the only ones with anything going. They were organized, had their act together. They had a reason ... a purpose. Albeit a seemingly very negative one. But still ... A lone wolf wasn't going to get far or cope well with this situation ... they had something. And he needed to bide his time & straighten things out for himself.
"Hmm?"
"Ehrr ... All right, fine!"
The group heaved a collective sigh.
"O ... K . What's the password?'
"There is no God, Buddha or angel,'" the speaker stated as she advanced & shook the young mans' hand. "Welcome aboard. I'm Yuri ... leader of this name changing Battlefront.
"And this is Hinata ... ," indicating to her left. "He's just as lazy as he looks but sometimes he pulls through."
"Hn ... yeah," the new intro smiled then brought himself up short. "Hey! That's no compliment!"
The leader flourished to her right pointing out a heavily built gentleman. "The big guy here is Matsushita ..."
"Hehh, she's ignoring me!" Hinata muttered.
"He's a 5th dan belt in judo so we call him 'Matsushita the 5th' in respect."
"Nice to meetcha'." The big fellow wrapped his sizable mitt over the newcomers'.
"Hn!" Hinata looked on, still smarting from the 'compliment'.
Pointing to the back of the group at a somewhat squeamish looking individual, Yuri said, "this one's Oyama. His special talents are he doesn't have any."
"Welcome to the Battlefront man," said the diminutive one shaking his hand.
"Dance to the beat!" A blindfolded apparition leaped in front of him pointing both indexes. "Don't fear the reaper!"
"I don't dance guy."
"That's his way of saying hi. We call him TK but no one knows his real name. Even I don't have any idea what his deal is."
"Rockin' to the groove! Feelin' it? Feel it!" TK gyrated.
"What exactly is this guy on? I could use some right now."
She continued with the intros. "The guy constantly straightening his glasses trying to look intelligent is Takamatsu ... He's not particularly bright though"
"Huh?"
"Very nice to meet you." Straightening glasses.
"Uh ..."
"This here is Fujimaki."
"Fujimaki's the name, punk!" The sword bearer challenged.
"I'm not a punk-," the stranger answered looking away.
"That guy who went flying was Noda."
"The girl lurking in the shadows who keeps saying 'this is so stupid' is Shiina ... " A still, silent figure stared balefully from out of the north east corners' gloom, sizing him up.
"And sitting here," Yuri indicated the red haired young lady leaning against the end of a couch, "is Iwasawa. She leads the diversionary unit.
"There's a couple dozen others around the school who are also members of Battlefront.
"OK, that's all of us now, who are you?"
"Uh, um, O ... O ... Oto ... Otonashi ..."
"First name?"
"Can't remember."
"The whole amnesia scenario eh?" Hinata speculated then reassured, "don't worry. It'll come back eventually."
"Hey, wait a minute!" Matsushita. "Shouldn't we give him a uniform?"
"Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that."
"So tell me," Otonashi asked as he compared his slashed & battered shirt with the khaki blazers of the men. "Why's my uniform different? From all of yours I mean."
"Oh yours isn't different, ours is," the leader seated herself behind the desk putting her feet up. "What your wearing's the normal student uniform. This uniform is just for us. We ... are class SSS. Shinda Sekai Sensen. The Battlefront."
Otonashi noted the heraldic shield shoulder patch. Three runic Ss' over laurel trim with scroll banner under stating: Rebels Against the God.
Hinata put his hand on Otonashis' shoulder. "C'mon buddy, let's see what we can dig up for you.I'm sure we can find something."
Turning to go with Hinata, the newcomer brought himself up short.
"Oh ... uh ... who's she?"
"Who's what?" The Front leader answered.
"The girl near Shiina ... In the chair at the end of the bookcase reading. You didn't introduce her."
"Say what?" Yuri quick turned her head for a look at the case.
"I noticed her right after I came to. She's been there quiet this whole time."
Shiina advanced toward the cases' end.
"Yeek!
The ninja girl sprang back, knives drawn. The rest let out a collective gasp. As Otonashi said, a bespectacled young lady sat where he indicated, closing her book & calmly scanning the room.
"Impossible!" Shiina exclaimed. "How could she ... I would have noticed her!"
The group murmured. This was serious. As everyone knew, NOTHING got by Shiina ... & yet ...
"Wait a sec," said Yuri launching herself over the desk. "Who ... & how did she-?"
"You don't know?"
All eyes (but Shiinas') turned toward the one making the question.
"What're you talkin' 'bout Oyama?" Fujimaki asked.
"Uh ... she's a member ..."
"Of what?"
"Er ... the Battlefront ... Ever since we started. She's-"
"Hold up!" Yuris' hand in a stop position, eyes shifting between Oyama & the girl. "You ... know her?"
"Well ... Yeah ... don't you? Her name is-"
"How're we supposed to know her? I'm the leader," she panned accross the group noticing their mutual confusion, "& I'VE never seen her before. Other than you ... It seems none of us have."
"Again," Otonashi interrupted in reiteration. "I noticed her when I woke up here. She's wearing the same uniform so I assumed she's with you."
The Front members turned in unison again to the seated figure. True enough, the percieved interloper was clad in the blue & white girls uniform of the SSS.
"Kinda' reminds me of Angel," observed Matsushita noting the girls' calm demeanor as well as dead pan non-expression.
With that, the hostility quotient rose a few notches.
"A spy no doubt," Takamatsu speculated, "and not a very good one."
"Good enough to get by us ... AND Shiina," countered Yuri.
An audible growl emitted from the ninja girl ready to spring.
"Wait! ... Guys! ... She's one of us! Really!"
The bunch looked back at Oyama.
"I'm tellin' ya ... She's been with us from the beginning. Came with the room I guess. I remember seeing her in here a lot when it was still the principals office."
"So how come none of us ever noticed her 'til now?" Yuri inquired. "And that was when our newbie just pointed her out."
"I don't know ... She's sat here with us often enough ... In on our operations planning ... voted with us on everything. We've stepped around her often enough. I mean ... She's quiet ... more so than Shiina & Yusa combined."
"Yusa?" Otonashi.
"Our scout & spotter." Hinata explained. "She's usually out running around with that cel of hers keeping Yurippe informed of anything happening on campus."
"Why hasn't she tried to communicate?"
"She's talked often enough ... No one seemed to notice. I talk with her ... Come to think of it ... She's the only one who ever really ... talks to ... me."
"Great!" Fujimaki exclaimed tauntingly. "Not only we have TWO 'new' members but Oyama here has a girlfriend."
With some muted laughter all around, the tension, if not the scepticism, eased up to a marked degree with the exception of the still on full alert Shiina.
"It's not like that!" The flustered 'pure boy' exclaimed. "Though .. I wish it ... was."
Oyama gasped as he, along with everyone else, noticed the stranger looking straight at him, a slight smile on her face.
"Way to go buddy!" A surprised/impressed Fujimaki softly elbowed Oyama. "Looks like its just that."
"Whimper ... "
Deciding on direct action, Yuri brushed past Otonashi & slowly approached the bluish gray haired young lady still seated.
"O-K ... " she said signalling for Shiina to back off. "From appearances you SEEM to be on our side ... Though I have my doubts."
"I am." No hesitation in her whispery reply.
"And ... as Oyama says ... You've been with us from the start ... correct?"
"Yes I have."
"All right. Now for the really important question ... What IS your name? ... Just who ARE you?"
The young lady did a slow blink then adjusted her glasses in almost the same slightly irritating way Takamatsu did.
"Yuki Nagato."

Dr. Faustus: With the Devil, the Deck Is Stacked
![]() |
| Richard Burton & "friend" ponder the wonders & joys of his FINAL DESTINATION in Dr. Faustus (1967, Columbia Pictures Corp.). |
Dr. Faustus: With the Devil, the Deck Is Stacked
Dr. Faustus is a tale of a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge, power, & the various services of the nether-world. Richard Burton in the title role of Faustus, becomes dissatisfied with his acheivments in the numerous philosophies & sciences & turns to the black arts in his quest for riches both material & of the intellect. As time goes on & runs out, he becomes aware of the emptiness of such things & of the nearness of the payment (His soul.) due. Try as he might, he cannot turn back to God & thus be saved from separation from God & eternal damnation. With his back on Christ, he is literally dragged into the very hell he seeks to escape.
This is a stage play set to film & comes across as such. All the actors, with the exception of Elisabeth Taylor, are stage trained & while it does show, it in no way takes from it. The film was panned by the critics not only for the above but also for Ms. Taylors' lack of acting. Considering the (non-speaking) role(s) she played in it & her good looks, she didn't have to. She literally walks through the movie.
I had first seen it on TV during a family summer vacation in Kentucky in the late 60s'. After a days' swimming, hiking, restaurant, we settled down in the cabin for a bit of viewing.
The movie did cause me a bit of concern. Raised as a Catholic, I was told rather vaguely about what salvation was & all that doctrinal dancing around it didn't help. The emphasis on ritual & extra-biblical doctrine/tradition only served to cloud the issue & I was left in the dark as to the fate of my immortal soul. Constantly being threatened with hell/purgatory if I didn't follow the instruction of priest & nun I had pretty much given up on Heaven as it had seemed unattainable.
So what if I followed ALL instructions to the letter? According to THE CHURCH ... Even if I did toe the line ... Even if I did wrap myself in their spiritual straitjacket 110% ... Even if I worked my way up & became the best pope ever ... I might still have had to fry in Purgatory for a million years or so in order to burn out any residual sin.
A million years in Purgatory? You know ... that place that's the next best/worst thing to hell or Cleveland? As a million years seemed pretty much forever, I decided to risk hell & take it easy.
In '74, I got aquainted with fundamentalism & escaped from ... THE CHURCH. Not that the "rapture bunnies" don't have their issues, but that's another story. Salvation, in & of itself supercedes all man made tradition/doctrine no matter who/where it comes from.
So I saw Dr. Faustus to the end & it did trouble me some. No matter how much Burtons' character wanted to turn from evil, he just couldn't bring himself to do it. Between Lucifer, procrastination, Liz Taylor & his own weak character, the deck seemed pretty well stacked. His Catholic upbringing probably didn't help much either. "Let's see ... I turn from evil ... & go back to ... THAT!?"
The film ends with Liz dragging him to perdition albeit a pantomime one. Think Monty Python & the Holy Grail but without the laffs. To my then 13 year old mind, this was powerful stuff & stayed with me.
A couple years back, I found this as a three dollar special at Big Lots. I take it out every six months & watch. The film is still powerful but in a different way. Having come to a real understanding of the gift Jesus offers (See second link below.), I now look at this movie as something more cautionary & redemptive than scary.

The Capitalism/Socialism Non-Difference

The Capitalism/Socialism Non-Difference
by
Jay Agan
For many years we have been fooled. Fooled with a lie still being used to manipulate us into being good little servers of the system. That lie is the so-called difference between capitalism & socialism.
Difference? I sure don't see it. I do see, not only similarity, but compatability. Several in fact. They are:
1. Both capitalism and socialism view the universe & explain everything in terms of economics and materialism. "Intangibles" such as family, friends, race, ethnic identity, nation, individuality, spirituality have no meaning unless they can be exploited somehow for economic gain or power.
2. Both deal with the individual as part of an artificial collective. With socialism it's "the brotherhood of man ", the community, society, "for the children" , whatever the "cause" they're for or whatever they're calling the hive mind this week. With capitalism it's the corporation, the team, the board, the company, etc. Such terms are used by those for scoring talking points, pushing agendas & controlling individuals.
Collectives aren't living, breathing entities. They have no mind of their own & do not act volitionally.
3. Both put the rights of the artificial collective above that of the individual.
4. Both look upon the individual as part of a rescource pool. Something to be used then tossed away. The term "human rescources" is something of an indictment.
5. Both use the individual as a statistic, an economic unit. An entry in a ledger to be added, subtracted, multiplied, divided, fractionalized, decimalized, atomized, then ultimately isolated & tossed away.
6. To either, a living, breathing human being is only an object, a thing. Having no value except to that of the artificial collective. To be used in a manner suitable to furthering that collective. To be discarded when no longer useful.
I do make a distinction between capitalism & free enterprise. Free enterprise involves the TRADITIONAL employer/employee relationship. This is where the employee trades his time, skill, experience etc. for whatever pay/benefits agreed upon. The employer can only demand a good job done & NOTHING MORE.
In the traditional employer/employee relationship neither demands anything beyond that. If the employer does go over that line it's capitalism. If the employee, it's socialism.
Capitalism? Socialism? I care for neither. From my perspective I have found capitalism to be more of a menace to me than socialism. I have lived in a capitalist country all my life and have have been treated shabbily by such a system. I do not doubt for one moment that socialism is no less a danger. It's that I have been on the sharp end of a capitalist system and draw my experience from that. After all, no socialist has ever:
1. Lied to me about my wages then shorted me.
2. Layed me off then say I was fired or quit when I tried to collect unemployment benefits.
3. Tried to monopolize my time. (Mandatory overtime, etc.)
4. Spied on me at work, written me up for political incorrectness, thus denying me advancement or having me fired.
5. Demand submission to drug testing, flu shots, no smoking pledges and other forms of privacy invasion as a condition for employment.
6. Report me to government agencies (INS,etc. I was born here damnit!) as to my place of employment.
7. Tried to coerce me into doing something illegal that could put me in danger of arrest.
8. Lie about benefits.
9. Lie about a crippling injury occuring at work thus denying the validity of claim.
10. Tried to coerce me to work in unsafe working conditions.
These were done to me by capitalists. Socialists I do not like, or ever shall, but I'm under no illusions as to the "sanctity" of capitalism, or the oft proclaimed benevolence/benefits thereof. Anyone who does me an injury is my enemy, left or right.

Ray Harryhausen: Farewell To A Master
Words cannot describe the sadness I have over the passing of this great artist. I'll leave that to all the other articles on the net. Other than Willis O'Brien (Mr. Harryhausens' mentor.) & George Pal, there are no other stop-motion animators I can think of. Since the passing of Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Harryhausen WAS stop-motion animation. His work in motion pictures left a deep impression on me & are a great influence in my tastes in film.

Spirited Away: Giving It Another Shot
![]() |

Spirited Away: Giving It Another Shot
A few years back I saw Hayao Miyazakis' anime-ted film Spirited Away ... on Cartoon Network ... AND HATED IT.
It was too darn long. Too darn weird even for a fantasy. And Puke-Faces' ... er ... uh ... No-Faces' puke fest didn't help at all. I don't know why I wasted over three hours viewing that mess. And it was a mess. Though at the time I knew why ... commercials ... stretching a 2 hr, 5 min. film into three long agonizing hours.
I was a 'victim' of one of TV programmings' not so subtle little tricks: Show the first 20+ minutes of a flick to get you hooked then slog through commercial breaks every 10 minutes or less. Unless it's commercial free, the vast majority of films are unsuited for TV. Spirited Away is no exception.
I knew eventually I would have to give this movie another chance. Cartoon Networks' handling of it left such a bad taste, I kept putting it off for several years. Finally the taste went away & I got to thinking seriously of another try. So it was with some reluctance I scored a copy at Half Price Books & popped it in the disc machine.
BIG DIFFERENCE! The film didn't drag this time. The weirdness was more enjoyable without the latest must-have piece of junk being shoved at me. No-Faces' vomit party was only a few minutes long (I'm sure there were TWO{!} commercial breaks during that sequence when it aired!). I STILL think it's a bit on the long side (I'm a 90 minute man.) but it being a Miyazaki flick & all that goes with it, more than makes up for it.
I think I'll keep this one.

Gabrielle Giffords: Professional Martyr, Predatory Victim
![]() |
| Misguided tool or the face of evil? You decide. I have. |
Gabrielle Giffords: Professional Martyr, Predatory Victim
In the letters section of the 4-19-13 edition of the New York Times, there were ten letters in regard to the recent vote-down in the U.S. Senate on expanded background checks on prospective gun buyers. Only two of the ten could be considered pro-gun. Instead of five for, five against, it seems they wanted to give the impression of overwhelming support of new gun laws. A perfect example of media creating "consensus" in favor of editorial policy.
In one of the two pro-gun letters, a Mr. Laurence Frank summed up neatly as to what the so-called "gun lobby" really is:
"The gun control movement completely fails to understand that the "gun lobby" is not the despised National Rifle Association. It is the nearly 100 million Americans who are unwilling to be disarmed by frightened people who are for the most part wholly ignorant about firearms."
There are things I would like to add to the above statement but before I do, I issue this disclaimer:
I do not know Mr. Frank or of any opinions he might have further on this subject. The remainder of this article are my thoughts & opinions only.
Had I written such a letter, I would also have mentioned three other groups seeking the goal of unilateral personal disarmament. In fact, the very ones manipulating & using the above mentioned herd for their own gain &/or their misguided vision of the future. They are:
1. Media creatures - Those declaring/creating concensus where there really is none in order to further ratings & market share. Forget their stats & polls. My own obsevation/personal experience have shown they are bogus. Besides, a free man is a majority of ONE & not swayed by the emotional non-will of the mob.
2. Politicians - Both the "crusaders" & self serving. Their goal is in making people more dependent on them & expand government power.
By the way ... Where was government power during Newtown/Sandy Hook? Oh yes ... Doing its primary job of issuing traffic tickets between stops at the doughnut shop. To be fair, the police can't be everywhere at once. Like most cuckholds, they're really only good for "cleaning up" afterwards.
3. Professional victims - In the '80s & '90s we had the spectacle of James Brady being paraded about as the poster child for heaven on earth (Where the sun always shines & the lolipops dance.). Todays' advocate for "nirvana now" is none other than Gabrielle Giffords. She is the one we're instructed to gaze upon in awe & automatically concede the arguement. She has been touched by the gods & morally annointed from above. Woe to he who doesn't roll over, for IF he doesn't, then one can be then branded as an INSENSITIVE HEARTLESS BASTARD.
Well ... I have news for Ms. Giffords & her handlers:
I ... don't ... care. Why?
Because ... I have been ... & always will be ... an INSENSITIVE HEARTLESS BASTARD!
I am disgusted & repelled by the "irrefutable" example of the martyr as justification for me having to give up what is mine. I am revulsed by the imagined sanctity of those making a claim on me through their "sainthood".
A. Ms. Giffords' wounds are NOT some badge of authority cancelling out my standing in the arguement.
B. Her "martyrdom" & victimhood are NOT shields against my questioning her dubious motives.
C. Her past suffering is NOT a legitimate excuse for moving on MY rights, liberty & property.
She is not a hero.
She is, at best, only a victim.
She has now, willingly, made herself an adversary.
For the moment, I'm giving the greiving relatives of Sandy Hook a pass. As it is now, they are in too much of a state as to resist the attentions of those who would manipulate them. If, down the road, some of them are still allowing for it then I'll have to lump them with Giffords.
Ayn Rand called it "Tyranny of the victim". Those making a claim on you because of their victimhood.
DON'T FALL FOR IT.
Just sayin' ...

The Big "What If" of Haruhi Suzumiya: A Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Fan Fiction
The Big "What If" of Haruhi Suzumiya
A Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Fan Fiction
by
C V Ford
I was warned. Much more than twice & not just by Taniguchi. Others who attended East Junior with Haruhi clued me in on her past as well as personality. Her odd behavior & outlook certainly made her stand out.
Call it curiosity, masochism or, admittedly, just plain libido, I was attracted to her ... at first. As Taniguchi said, she certainly wasn't hard to look at. But ... A pretty face can hide a warped mind blinding one to it & ...
One indication of strangeness was her undressing in front of everyone for gym, even before the guys left for another room to change. Modesty didn't seem much to her. That & the feelings of others.
The alternate daily hairstyles (The initial icebreaker between us.) I found intriguing as well as endearing. Cutting her hair shorter right after my inquiring about it was certainly off putting (An attempt to put distance between us or just to spite me?). It didn't hurt her looks any, but I really missed the ponytail she would put it in for gym.
There was also the fact she, at one time or another, joined every school club/sports team then walk away from it after a few days at most. Super talented, great at sports & just about everything else, all the teams/clubs did what they could to get her to stay on. She'd have none of it.
Taniguchi in particular, filled me in on her (very) checkered romantic past. Absolutely nil. She'd be "with" someone on an average of a few days at most then, like the clubs/teams, drop the guy like a live grenade. Said she found guys uninteresting as they weren't the sci-fi types she was looking for. Thought life more interesting if some were the aliens, time travellors, espers & sliders she only read about.
Friends & classmates thought it interesting I could actually get SOMETHING of a conversation out of Haruhi. Taniguchi was especially intrigued & Ryoko Asakura, due to her concern as our class rep, wanted me as a go between for info on her.
For a fleeting moment, I thought the class seating rearrangement would put a halt to our non- relationship (She was more than just starting to get on my nerves.) but no such luck. The only good thing coming of it was we were now in back next to the windows thus some scenery ... her presence still seated behind.
It was at the start of a typical day of mandatory education/indoctrination I engaged her in some of our customary before class small talk. Getting around to the subject of the schools' clubs I asked her to tip me off if she ran across any that were interesting.
She went off on a tirade about none of them being remotely worth her while, even citing a couple examples being nothing more than collections of fans & freaks (Look who's talking!). Then bemoaning the fact there weren't any strange/cool clubs & humanity being a bland joke in general.
I explained that that was the way it was ... but ... While most folks were pretty much satisfied with their lot, there are & have been those few who weren't & did something about it. It's always a minority of a minority responsible for any real human progress. Their thought, invention, building, struggle, & achievment were the reasons we have all the things we enjoy in the present.
As for the general run of humanity ... well ...
"... ordinary people are probably better off living their ordinary little lives in an ordinary manner-"
"Shut up!"
"Uh ..."
"Hmmph!" She turned looking out the window.
From our previous conversations & observing her with others, I knew she could be rude, even verbally abusive. It bothered some & was certainly getting to me at times. It never ocurred to me she could be abusive physically as well. Maybe it was she wasn't ever close enough with anyone before to get that far. It's said "familiarity breeds contempt" & maybe we had gotten "familiar" enough for something to happen. All I know is what happened next was totally unexpected & sudden.
About two thirds of the way through first period English I felt a set of fingers close around the back of my collar & a hellacious yank compressing my throat, pulling me backwards. Next was the pain as the back of my head whacked the desk behind. Man! That REALLY hurt!
The only other time I recieved a blow to the back of the head was from a bully in middle school who was giving Kunikida a hard way to go. Without thinking, I spun around & we went at it. Wether it was he not being as tough as he wanted everyone to think or I was tougher than I thought or both ... A teacher had to separate us. He never tried anything with us after.
The source of pain being a woman this time kept my fists from flying as I jumped up & faced her.
"What the hell's wrong with you! I oughta'-"
"I got an idea!"
"Like I should care! You-"
"I can't believe I didn't realize it before! It's so obvious!"
And she so oblivious!
"Now look!"
"If it doesn't exist I should just make it myself!"
"Make what yourself? I don't-"
"Make a club!"
My thoughts turned to one of a different kind.
"Look! Can it will ya? It's-"
"What's with you!? This is what we're talkin' about! You should be happy about this development."
I slowly undid a fist & put the hand on her shoulder. "Look ... I know where you're coming from but ..." I turned toward the rest of the classroom before us & gestured, "we're in the middle of class!"
Teacher & fellow students, Taniguchi & Kunukida nervously amused, the rest only nervous, watched as we got back in our seats.
"Uh ... sorry ... ," to the class.
Haruhi only muttered something under her breath.
I was in a muttering mood myself. That crack to the back of my head was already having its' after effects. If you've ever had that happen to you, you know what I'm talking about. It's not so much the pain from the initial blow as it is the shock shooting lengthwise through your brain & colliding with the front of your skull. Leaving a not so dull, lingering ache between the frontal lobes & the top & backs of your eyes. This deep headache was going to last at least all day. That damn Haruhi! Where did she get off DOING that!? She was damn lucky I didn't haul off & ...
I undid my tie & unbuttoned the shirt collar in hopes of relieving some of the pressure building in my head.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Class over, the teacher left after the customary bow. I turned, starting toward the door for some air when ...
Haruhi instantly grabbed my tie & started running, obviously with the intention of dragging me off somewhere. The tie whipped out as I tried grabbing it, my hand shooting up & deflecting the end into my left eye.
"Gyaaah!"
She slammed to a halt, dumfounded, looking at the loose tie in her hand completely ignoring me clutching my eye & bent over.
Holysonofawhatthe ... ! Unbelievable! In the space of less than half an hour I'm injured twice by this fantastically callous jerk! You STUPID ... unheeding ... little ... !
I straightened up, looking at her with my one good eye. The one hit was tearing up fast!
Haruhi looked up from the tie proclaiming, "you're gonna help!"
Like hell I was gonna do anything but give her more than a piece of my mind! In baseball, it's three strikes for an out but I wasn't going to wait for the third. I grabbed her by the arm, hauling her, protesting, to the corner behind her desk. Still holding my left eye, I looked with my one good one into hers.
"I ... have no interest ... whatsoever ... in your club ... or anything else you have on your mind. I was warned about you. You ... are a rude ... obnoxious ... self centered ... ABUSIVE ... little ... b---h. And I want ... absolutely ... nothing ... NOTHING! ... at ALL ... to do with you.
"Listen ... & listen good. From now on ... Unless we have to be in the same classroom together ... DON'T ... come near me. Unless we're forced to work on something together here at school ... DON'T ... even think ... of talking to me. Any thought ... idea ... whatever you have rattling around in that head of yours ... is of NO concern to me. Keep away! You're poison ... And as for your club or whatever, you can take it and ..."

| I turned my back on a shocked but also obviously PO-ed Haruhi ... |
I turned my back on a shocked but also obviously PO-ed Haruhi & started toward the other door with every intention of having the school nurse take a look at my eye. It was really hurting & watering so bad as to be running down my cheek!
I waved an approaching Ryoko off so she rushed to Haruhi now stalking out of the classroom, trying to communicate with her. Taniguchi with Kunikida stood waiting.
"Looks like we're gonna have to get you to the nurse Kyon!"
Way ahead of you Taniguchi.
"Wow Kyon!" Kunikida exclaimed. "For a moment there I thought you were gonna punch her lights out!"
For a moment there, I thought I was. We stepped out in the hall, fast walking to the infirmary.
"Kyon ole buddy ... YOU ... have made history. I don't think anyone has EVER told her off. But then ... I don't think anyone has ever gotten close enough really to know what she's like. Too bad it was you ..."
Thanks Taniguchi. You're a real morale builder.
"Guess this rules out any future possibilities in her direction."
Goes without saying!
"Well Kyon," Kunikida piped in. "There's other weird fish in the sea."
Et tu Kunikida?
"Kyon! Wait up!"
We turned to see Ryoko catching up, concern written all over her more than pretty face.
She walked with us to the nurses' office, lamenting she couldn't get a word out of Haruhi. Like I cared!
I informed her of what happened & reiterated what I told the menace ... In a much nicer way of course. Caring & sweet as well as the prettiest in the school, her personality in more than sharp contrast to Suzumiya. Doubtful SHE could hurt anyone ... not even unintentionally.
-----------------------------------------------
The nurse took one look at me, slapped a patch on the eye & personally drove me to the emergency room. Two doctors examined me, exclaiming how lucky I was in avoiding any really serious damage to the eye. After applying medicine & a new patch they sent me home with a prescription & a note for school the next day. The rest of the day off from school ... At least I got SOMETHING out of it!
Getting home, I got lots of sympathy from Mom & some from Dad on his returning home from work. After school, little sister refrained from pestering me about anything, even bringing me goodies as I tranquilized in front of the TV. I later called Taniguchi & Kunikida informing them I would live. They, in turn, relayed thankfully light homework assignments, easily done.
After a great dinner of omelette rice & some of my other favorites (Mom was going all out to make me feel better.) I turned in early.

| I was puzzled how such a beautiful girl could have such a warped personality ... |
I thought about Haruhi before falling off. I was puzzled how such a beautiful girl could have such a warped personality. It made no sense to me ... her acting the way she does & her callous treatment of others.
Well, as far as I was concerned, any possibilities in that direction ... what might have been ... were over before they started. I figured it best to find out sooner than down the road where it could have been much worse.
-------------------------------------------------------
Another day of mandatory education/indoctrination, I stepped into the classroom. Something didn't feel ... right.
I knew the day already wasn't going to go as well as I would have liked. I woke with a dull headache with my left eye hurting somewhat. Some kind of head cold I guess ...
Yamane sat in his usual place behind mine, head buried in some book.
Looking up, he must have noticed my expression as he asked, "something wrong Kyon?"
"Not sure", I replied getting to my desk. "Something wierd ... out of place."
"Oh?"
"I get in here & seeing you sitting there ... I can't help but think ... Maybe someone else should be sitting there & not you."
A girl maybe?
"Nope ... As we both know, been here since we drew names/numbers a few weeks ago."
"Y'know? Come to think of it." I scanned the room as more people filed in. "The whole seating arrangement here doesn't seem ... right."
I looked diagonally three rows over, two from the front.
"This ... is ... really ..."
"Really what?"
"Shouldn't a girl be sitting there instead of ... ?"
Yamane gave a puzzled smile. "Sure you ain't flipping out or something?"
"Or something ... Like some kind of weird form of ... deja-vu."
"Hey! Maybe you're experiencing a 'butterfly wave' of some kind."
"A ...? Yeah ... sure ..." I noted the book he held up. Yamane always was absorbed with sci-fi of one kind or another. Couldn't fault him for it. Until recently I was into it myself until I got bored/disillusioned with it. Still picked up the odd related manga every now & then though.
"Kinda' like an I go back in time, shoot my grandfather paradox kind of thing?"
"Yeah, & everything needing correcting does so up to the present with major or lingering after effects."
"No ... Doubt it's anything like that. Just not feeling good right now. Bit under the weather ..."
"Be cool if it was."
How could it be cool if something like that DID happen? There'd be no way of knowing.
"That book about anything like that?"
"Yeah"
"Any good?"
"Not as good as the last one."
"Your last one, that was-"
"The Melancholy of Yukari Tanizaki."
"Oh yeah, about a crazy, weird teacher with an attitude who happens to be God & doesn't know it?"
"That's the one," beamed Yamane. "It's up to her friends on the faculty to make sure she never finds out. If she does, the universe goes in the tank!"
Yeah. As if ...
"You oughta' get back into this stuff Kyon. Nothing like firing the imagination."
No ... I was steadily losing my sense of wonder. Reality closing in & plenty enough for me right now.
As cool as it would be if stuff like that were real, my knowing it would never be pretty much put a damper on the enthusiasm I once had for it. Besides, if stuff like that was the normal state of affairs ...
How would anyone know it was cool! Be as mundane & commonplace as things are now. Just as well ...

At the Track
At the Track ...
by
Weatherly Hardy
There are two main time-tracks understood in the world. One derives from a Creator, the other from naturalistic process. This distinction is necessary, because on the one hand, a Creator has built meaning and purpose into His creation, whereas any meaning or purpose in, say, an evolutionary track, must be invented ultimately by any sapience wot comes along. The created sapience owes fealty to the Creator, and obedience, and even love; one need show no sense of gratitude or appreciation, or affection for the impersonal forces driving the evolutionary track.
It is significant that Charles Darwin, he who popularised TENS (the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection) was a lapsed Unitarian/Anglican. (A note: Bishop Usher's 6000-year age of the earth need not apply. The issue is a non-starter, Biblically speaking.) It is important to understand the VAST difference between the two tracks. The Creation provides a framework for understanding cosmology, as well as our own place in the Universe. It establishes an order and purpose for humankind. It especially establishes family, the much touted foundation of society. The silly notion of male and female producing offspring as a family is showcased here. Adam and Eve. Other rhyming names need not.... The Creation Model sets up men and women as families, and defines marriage based upon the Creator's commands and covenants. "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (Gen. 2:24)
From place names to ancient peoples, the Bible has been proven time and again to be accurate. That is a fair reason to consider its other claims as being so, as well. So what's the point? Marriage is not some sociological accident in antiquity, but derives from a covenant-making God's instruction. With this model, there is coherence, and the growth of mankind through history. There is purpose for the Genesis-model family, beyond (but including) the satisfying of sexual desire. The very structure of society grows from this beginning, and without it, there is no coherent society. Indeed, we are told by Paul: "For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named..." (Eph. 3) The world has it backwards. We did not name God "Father" because we wanted a "sky Daddy" to love us. Our families, rather, are named from His Fatherhood.
This is why Marriage=Man+Woman is important, and should be inviolate. Certainly, same-sex couples can adopt, or have surrogates, or in vitro fertilization, and may be loving parents, but it is not according to Hoyle, and is not the foundation provided in the Creation model. The sterile man and wife we-want-it-all marriages are as faulty. (This is no Quiverfull screed ... but fruitfulness IS the norm, not the exception in the Biblical model.)
The problem now is that Government in its mercy has taken over the role of arbiter of What Is Correct. Much as I dislike using the term, from the beginning, marriage has been the purview of religion; it is covenant-based (which is why adultery was punished so severely: death ends a covenant; this includes killing the breaker of a covenant.) Now it is the stuff of bureaucrats and lawyers. Requiring a state license is as legitimate to the purpose of marriage as collecting a tax on the communion elements every Sunday morning. With its oversight, the beneficent State grants privileges and allowances with the marriage license. Those not so entitled are jealous, and want the same benefits as man-and-wife, but they do not fit the model, the original pattern. What to do? Make everyone see it their way, and see how unFAIR it all is. Had marriage remained the realm of the church (now), this would be far less of a problem, but the bottom line is, if we change the definition, we can all pretend we are all equivalent, and it will be FAIR.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less."
The naturalist, TENS model offers no such coherence. Whether it is quanta bumping into one another, or whole societies, it is all the accident of Brownian motion writ large: no plan, no purpose, beyond what we Humpty Dumpty for ourselves, and then the definitions don't matter anyway (and no, I do not think I am caricaturing the model). The anyone marrying anyone is not a matter of slippery slopes; it is a matter if it doesn't matter. We are the rule-makers, and we are the deities of dreams.
I wish that I could be more clear in my expression of this. I am still working it out, but despite the various sideroads branching off, there is either the covenant history track, or the accident of nature track. The choice of which model you follow determines your understanding of the Universe, meaning and purpose. Marriage is only one part of it, but if we get that part wrong, the future suffers, as will we.
