"Kaorin?"

On looking up from her cafeteria lunch, Kaorin Aida took in a quick intake of breath. Before her, the tall, statuesque beauty that was Sakaki smiled down upon her.

"M- ... Miss Sakaki? ... is-"

"Yes Kaorin, it's me."

The girl leaped from her seat, enfolding the taller in her arms.

"I ... I can't believe it! ... YOU!" She exclaimed. "Here of all places! How-?"

"And I can't believe you're here either," Sakaki replied, enthusiastically returning the embrace.

"I ... gave up hope of ever seeing you again," Kaorin started breaking down. "I didn't believe you ... died in that accident until I came to the service, then ... "

"Kaori-"

Did she just call me-?

"Don't cry dear," the taller gazing into the tearful eyes of the shorter. "We're both here now. That's what's important."

The two separated.

Sakaki sat, anxiously gesturing for Kaorin to do the same. Both seated, the diminutive one continued.

"Word spread. Seemed like at least half the graduate class came to the service. Even though we took our college entrance tests weeks before, we agreed to show up in our old uniforms ... looked more like a school outing than a funeral. The street in front of your house was blocked. Police had to clear it."

"About ... Maya."

"Still concerned over your kitty ... That's so like you. Chiyo still has him. Taking good care of him."

"I'm so happy to hear that," the tall one relieved.

"Same old Sakaki. You always did love animals."

"Among ... ," she took Kaorins' hand in hers, "other things."

"... !"

"We know how I got here ... The last I remember was that truck rushing at our car. Mom and dad, I saw them just before I passed out, are they-?"

"Your parents are fine." Kaorin noting the way Sakaki held her hand. "They walked away from the wreck with minor injuries. The driver of the truck wasn't so lucky. News said heart failure. Probably died before the truck came through the light."

"What I meant was ... Why ... are you here? You're not even the last one I would expect."

Aida looked away but a moment. The events of the past three days ... Her own demise, trying to acclimate herself to her new situation ... Then finding the very object of her affections seemingly forever out of her reach ... HERE! In this unreal academy on the edge of ... what? Forever?

"When I heard what happened to you ... Your dying. I felt like I did too. Wanted to. I cried myself to sleep every night for over two weeks."

Kaorin didn't care about revealing her true feelings to the tall one. Not this time around. Things were now different. It seemed now even death couldn't separate them. Here ... a second chance to tell her of how she felt to her. No holding back. Not this time.

"I ... I've always loved you Sakaki." Blurting out not so unintentionally. "I-"

"I know you did Kaori."

"You-?"

"And I ... you."

Both of Sakakis' hands now held hers.

She ... called me Kaori ... again ... and-!

"Yes ... From the day we met ... our first day of high school. I only wish you did invite me to join the astronomy club."

"You remember that? I wanted to ... couldn't."

"Things might have been a LOT different if we weren't so shy about things ... each other."

"I thought you had no clue ... I thought you didn't even know I was alive at times."

"I did ... More than you think."

"How-"

"It was something I got very good at in middle school. The quiet, tall, socially awkward girl with no emotions." Sakaki smiled. "It was easy to see how YOU felt though."

Kaorin let out a gasped chuckle, her face reddening.

"I guess I was a little obvious."

"So tell me ... again. How did you-?"

"Oh ... that.

"As far as I can recall ... It was about three weeks after the service ... Yes! Just a few days ago in fact. I was having trouble with insomnia. The past few days I was in a heavy funk ... really depressed, couldn't sleep. Tried sleeping tablets ... and ... well ... I took one too many I guess."

"You ... ," Sakakis' concern more than evident, "... didn't?"

"Oh no!" Aida exclaimed, eyes intense. "It wasn't that! Suicide? No!"

"Then ..."

"The pills weren't working ... wasn't thinking straight ... must have thought one more wouldn't hurt. I guess it ... did."

"Kaori ... I'm so ... sorry ... I-"

"Don't be!" Kaorin closed her other hand over the ones already holding hers, eyes even more intense. "Things really ARE different now.

"I mean ... I come here ... what looks like a fresh start, sort of ... and now ... YOU!"

"Are you getting oriented?"

"Yes. Tachibana-san clued me in on most of it. Had to ask her a LOT of questions."

"Angel is tight lipped about a lot of things."

"Angel? Oh! That's right!" Kaorin scanned up and down the tall girl. "That different uniform of yours and all. I've started asking around about that group but didn't with anyone from the ... What do you call it?"

"Has a variety of names, but it always seems to end in Battlefront."

"What I could get from other students was strange... weird. All I could get out of Tachibana-san herself was something about uncooperative students."

"Oh ... She's right about that!"

"Why? Just what IS going on?"

"We all have different reasons for being in it as we all have different reasons for being here."

"Is it true ... ?"

"What exactly?"

"Your bunch runs around ... Pulling violent stunts ... uh ... carrying ... guns? I mean ... How do you get them and ... Do you?"

"Um ... Not right with me. No operation planned right now ... haven't even been on one yet."

"Just like you to join a rebel group of some kind. Like that bunch back in high school."

"You should have been with us more. We always thought of you as one of us Kaori."

"You ... did?"

"Me especially."

"Oh ... I-"

Sakaki drew Kaorin close, the breath of both on eithers' faces.

"It's like you said a moment ago. It really IS different now. We ... have a second chance here. I don't want to waste it and nor do I think you."

"M- ... Miss Sakaki ... I-" Kaorin ecstatic.

"I don't want to put you through another three years of what you ... we ... went through ...

"We can be room mates ... You or I can change dorm rooms. Can be easily enough arranged. We ... can be together now. We-"

Again embracing, their open lips meeting.

Kaorin, eyes closing, blissfully succumbing to Sakakis' proffered deep soul kiss.

xxxxx

The tall girl haltingly staggered to her feet, tearful eyes wide on the now empty chair before her. Leaning over, hand on the table, she drew in several deep breaths before slumping back down.

Head in hands, sobbing uncontrollably ... lamenting.

"Kaori! ... Oh God! ... Kaori ... I'm so ... sorry ... I didn't want to do it ... had to ... oh Kaori, Kaori  ... Please ... forgive me ... please don't hate me ... please ... don't ... Wherever you are now, I hope you understand ... I had to! I- ... OH GOD! ... I-"

Several self agonizing minutes passed before she noted the presence of three others seated close.

Looking up at the one directly across the table, through the tears she asked, "you ... saw what happened?"

"Yes," answered Yuri. "The whole thing."

"I'm ... I shouldn't have-"

"You did the right thing," Battlefront leader stoic. "Usually I'm against obliteration but this ... Had to be done.

"Are ... you alright?" Though knowing the tall one wasn't, Yuri still expressed more than obligatory concern.

"I ... will be. It'll take awhile ... but ... yeah"

"Are you sure?"

"Maybe," she answered, "if I tell myself what I did was right ... one day I might believe it."

"Believe it now. You had to do what was needed."

"It was," Sakaki without prompting, "as I thought. She was here because of me. That ... and how she got here ... Oh God!"

Nakamura reached over, putting a reassuring hand on that of the tall girl, her sobbing renewed.

"M- ... my fault ... my-"

"No. The fault is Not yours."

"When you spotted her yesterday, you knew you couldn't evade her here forever," Shiina being an expert on such things. "She would have found you eventually ... Sooner rather than later."

"It wasn't like it was your fault coming here," Yusa adding. "Nor of yours' in her following. And don't blame yourself for her huge crush on you. Any descisions and actions on her part were hers' alone."

"You have your own things to iron out. She would have only complicated things for you." Shiina

"And what you did," Nakamura trying to conclude. "Your seeing the situation. Taking matters into your own hands and acting on it. Proves you're one of us."

"I don't feel like ... anything."

"You'll get over it," Yuri consoling. "It was a tough decision you made. We've all had to make some here."

"Kaori was so messed up," Sakaki continued. "So was I. I wasn't ready for any kind of relationship let alone what she wanted. I never had any inclination in that direction. But I couldn't bring myself to tell her anything one way or the other. If I had the courage to ... this ... might never have happened.

"I might never have ended up here ... And she certainly wouldn't have either.

"And now ... I don't know where she is!"

"You gave her what she desired, yearned for. That was more than enough." Yusa explaining.

"I didn't. I did what I did to get her out the way. I didn't actually give her ... me."

"But she thought you did. That's what counts."

"It was a lie! It was-"

"Necessary ... It was necessary." Shiina declared. "And her thinking she attained the love she wanted was enough to have her leave."

"But I didn't love HER! Didn't ... couldn't, I-"

"But you did!"

Sakaki looked back at Yuri, puzzled look on her face.

"Not in the way she wanted, sure, but you loved her as a friend," explained the front leader. "Don't you see? You cared so much about her you didn't want to see her going through what you both did before. It wouldn't have been fair to either of you. Picking up where you left off would only have added to her suffering ... and yours.

"Instead of her being trapped with us in this in-between ... this partway ... You helped her find peace with herself. In doing so she passed on."

"Your feelings for her were genuine," Yusa adding. "They weren't quite the kind she would have wanted from you but they were enough."

"And God ... Knowing how bad off she was ... will understand," said Yuri almost choking on those words.

"I ... hope ... so ... I ..."

Burying her face in her hands again, Sakaki wept on ...

So Messed Up: A Hell Girl/Azumanga Daioh Fan Fiction

So Messed Up

A Hell Girl/Azumanga Daioh Crossover Fan Fiction

by

Kikuri gazed fascinatedly on the large web at porches' end for what seemed hours. Her childs' mind unable to get around her obsessive attachment to the creature residing within. The large spider had been absent for over a day, her concern evident.

A movement some distance to the left turned her attention from the web directing it down the cart trail. Coming up the path she could see Miss Ai & ...

"Oh!" She cried in semi-sadistic glee. "Old lady's back!"

Hone Onna grimaced. Though glad the assignment over sooner than expected, she now had to cope with the attentions of "little miss nasty" & her pre-juvenile antics.

"Don't you have someone else to play with Kikuri ... -CHAN?" Putting emphasis on the pause & honorific. "I think I saw Yamawaro down the road a moment ago-"

"Waro! Waro! Waro! Waro!" The imp sped past down the cart trail, arms "airplaning" & disappeared past the turn.

"Truly the daughter of darkness," observed Wanyudo reclining on the porches' other end.

"You may not be far off on that," replied the bone woman.

Ai looked on disapprovingly though agreed inwardly. At times the child was quite a couple handsful & could be more trouble than she was worth.

Ren, seated on the steps, made an observation. "As we're all still here, I take it she didn't go through with it."

Ai hesitated. Yes. True, but more complicated.

"Her hatred was more than enough to summon me ... something ... else."

The trio looked on as she stepped inside. Mayhap e-mail had another request.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaorin stepped briskly into the schools' main entrance, swinging her satchel in lighthearted rythym to her tread. A great weight had been lifted. She would not commit herself to the proposed bargain & the source of her years long torment would live ... And so would she.

The possibility of eternity in hell hadn't deterred her. She had been through a self inflicted one for almost three years. With over a nights' worth of considerable thought & soul searching, she faced the reality of it being of her own making & came to terms. With determination, it could be dealt with.

Rounding corner, she espied the slack jawed apparition staring her way from down the other end of the hall.

"As for you," she thought. "You're damn lucky something like you isn't worth such pain. There's too many like you for me to tear myself up over. A few more months til graduation & I'm out of here ... And you'll be out of my life ... forever."

Marching past the creepy litt teacher, she made it an obvious point to ignore his earnest/lame greeting. Her thoughts turned to the object of her years long obsession, a tear forming.

No. Though what she wanted would never be, she wouldn't ... COULDN'T ... bring herself to pull the string on Sakaki ... ever.

Not So Oblivious: An Azumanga Daioh Sakaki Kaorin Fanfiction

Did Sakaki know more about Kaorin than what she let on?

      "Hello? Kaorin?"

      "Yes?"

      "It's me, Sakaki!"

      "M ..... Miss Sakaki?"

      "Yes! How are you?"

"F ..... fine." She couldn't believe it. Miss Sakaki. HER Miss Sakaki. Calling her!

"Glad to hear it! Look hon. Remember when we were talking at the store a couple weeks ago? You suggested we take a night on the town? Go 'clubbing' or something?"

      "Uh ..... ye e es."

"Well something came up & I immediately thought of you."

"Oh?" Kaorin snapped out of her initial daze, now concentrating on the conversation at hand.

"My cousin Taru from Hokkaido is attending university here in Tokyo. He & a friend pledged not to get distracted until they got situated. Been studying & doing nothing else. Living like monks. Now they're done with their mid-terms & they'd like to take in some of the sights."

      "Well ..... uh ....."

"Since Taru would be 'odd man out' I thought you'd like to throw in on a double date."

Kaorins' mind raced in jumbled confusion. Date? Double date? As in with ..... boys? A guy? Not what she had in mind at all in regard to the object of her affections. But ..... if it could get her close to Sakaki ..... then .....

      "I ..... I don't know ..... I ....."

"You don't have anything planned for tomorrow, do you?"

"Just a sec," she tried not to sound anxious. It was all she could do to keep from hyperventalating. "I need to check."

She set the phone down & thought short & hard.

Of course she had nothing planned. After struggling through the last of her own mid-term exams (Which she aced.), it was going to be a Sunday of internet, junk food & TV.

OK. So a couple members of the male gender would be along. She would at least be with Sakaki. And if ..... just if ..... she could get her alone long enough later, she could finally tell her of her true feelings for her ..... If. A big IF ..... but worth a try. The two guys might be a perfect cover. If only she had the courage long ago. If only now .....

Snatching the phone back up, Kaorin gave her answer.

"No, nothing planned at all. Just needed to make sure nothing unexpected might come up."

"Great! "The tall one on the other end exclaimed. "Be at Shinjuku station by the news stand tomorrow, 10 AM sharp."

"Sounds like a plan. Shinjuku station. News Stand. 10 AM sharp. Got it!"

"Don't disappoint us hon. See ya tomorrow. Bye!"

      "Yeah ..... bye!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She was at the station just after 9 waiting ..... Waiting with plenty of time to think. Mostly rethinking her thoughts of the night before. A couple of boys along ..... not good.

"What if she's attached to this guy she'll be with?" She thought. "Definitely not good."

Her contact with Sakaki after high school was sporadic at best. With her university/science curriculum & Sakaki attending veterinary college, seeing one another was bound to be infrequent.

..... the months old photo .....taken right after their
high school graduation ceremony .....

She pulled out the months old photo of her & Sakaki taken right after their high school graduation ceremony. On the spur of the moment she "persuaded" a mutual friend to snap the picture resulting in a "staged" show of affection. The only time she showed any real resolve in trying to attain the object of her desire..... And the tall girl hadn't a clue.

Kaorin inwardly despaired over the three plus years of missed opportunities. No ..... Today. Today was going to be a go at another try. A try to make up for all the lost time & possibilities. So what if a couple men would be in tow? If she could just get her alone for a while. If the chance arose ..... NO! She wouldn't wait for a chance. She was going to make one! Today!

"Today!" She resolved. "Today's the ....."

"There she is!" A familiar voice proclaimed from behind.

Kaorin turned ..... slowly. Fully prepared to focus on Sakaki .....

Kaorin turned ..... slowly. Fully prepared to focus on Sakaki ..... and didn't.

As Kaorin feared, Sakaki approached arm in arm with a taller handsome young man. It was the even taller one accompanying the couple who gripped her complete & undivided attention. Though definitely a male of the species, there was no mistaking his relationship to Sakaki. The familial resemblance was beyond astounding.

      "Oh ..... my ..... GAH!"

      "Kaorin! You made it. Great!"

      Kaorin hardly heard her.

"Kaorin, this is Kanta," the tall girl said as she playfully tightened her grip on him.

The young science major hardly noticed as Kanta introduced himself.

"And this ..... is my cousin Taru."

The "giant" bowed slightly, taking Kaorins' tiny hand into his own sizable mitt. Gray eyes delved deeply into hers, neatly unfolding & turning her soul inside out. A deep yet soothing voice administered the "coup de grace" in simple introduction.

"Hello Kaorin. I'm happy to meet you. Sakaki's told me so much about you ....."

      Flowers! ..... Belltower! ..... Jets! ..... Jets! ..... JETS!

      "..... uh ..... ..... ..... hi?! ....."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey hon! Could use some help here!"

      "Oh?"

Sakaki had just fired off an email reply to her friend Chiyo in Los Angeles. The kid aced her semester finals at Pacific Tech (Good ole PIT!) & was going to vacation back in Tokyo. Things were definitely looking up for the 14 year old genius. 4.0 GPA. Deans' List. Several corporate entities expressed interest in her as a future possible resource. Including an embryonic U.N. sponsored think tank. She said she wasn't supposed to mention it ..... a GEHIRN something or other .....

The tall one got up from the computer desk & sauntered into the small apartments' living room.

      "Problem?"

"This vile beast of yours is beating the living crud outta me!" Exclaimed Kanta petting Maya as the large cat softly head butted a fuzzy brow against his chin.

"Silly ..... He's marking you, not punching you out."

      "Don't smell anything."

"Not supposed to," said Sakaki settling herself on the couch.

"So," Kanta changed the subject. "What are your thoughts now on Japans' most mis-matched couple?"

      "Those two .....," smiling.

"I swear, the way she dotes on him & he just eating it up ..... Dis gust ing!"

      "I think it's sweet! ..... "

"In a nauseating sort of way, yes. Ouch!"

She cocked her elbow back for another playful jab.

"When they first met, I thought that kid was going to die right then & there! It was all I could do to keep from losing it."

"I know. That unconvincing coughing fit didn't cover it at all well."

"Had to do something to keep from laughing. God it was so funny ....." Another soft jab cut the chuckles short.

"Don't think she noticed. Kaorin was TOTALLY fixated on Taru."

"Speaking of which, we were talking the other day. Y'know ..... guy talk."

Sakaki cocked a knowing eyebrow. "Comparing notes?"

"Nothing so crude I assure you," Kanta replied in a mock suave tone. "No. Just talking ..... Maybe I shouldn't tell you this ..... "

"Oh?" She sidled closer resting her chin on his right shoulder. "Tell me what?"

"Well ..... you know ..... how after couples have been together awhile they start telling each other things they normally wouldn't tell anyone else? Something we NEVER do by the way, ow!"

      "Yeah right ..... ," smiling.

"So Taru told me something & as it concerns you I thought you'd find it interesting."

      "And?"

"You might find it rather embarassing."

      "Mmmmm ..... go on."

"OK, Seems back in high school Kaorin had a ....."

"Kaorin had a 'thing' for me?"

"Uh ..... yeah .....  you knew?"

"Right from the very start. Just didn't know how to handle it."

      "..... "

"During grade & middle school, I had very ..... very few friends. I was always the tall, gawky kid with no social skills to speak of. Didn't fit in at all. Once I hit high school, I'm suddenly surrounded by all these unique, crazy kids who liked having me around & I them. Kaorin was one of them."

"Taru said to hear Kaorin tell of it, you had no idea. Not a clue."

"At first I welcomed the attention if only because it WAS attention. After a couple days I knew I couldn't reciprocate. Never had any inclination in that direction."

      "None at all?"

      "Absolutely none."

"Oh gee, too bad," Kanta put on an air of faux disappointment. "I was wondering ..... OW!"

"You ..... are," she laughed, "such ..... a ..... perv!"

      "That a complaint?"

      "Diagnosis. Proclamation!"

      "Any cure for it?"

"Well, there are some advanced students at school who can use the practice ....."

"I'll pass," Kanta quickly said smiling.

"Just as well. Though it would make you a much better pet."

      Sakaki grinned at Kantas' reaction.

"Any way, I didn't have the heart to tell her so I acted like I didn't notice anything. Had lots of practice with that in middle school."

      "Your chronic shyness?"

She snuggled in closer. "You seem to have helped a little with that," purring along with the cat.

      "A little?"

      "Lots!"

"Taru speculated you might have introduced them in hopes of  ..... uh ..... 'diverting' Kaorins' attention."

      "Mmmmmm ..... "

"Whatever the reason, he's really glad you got them together. He's entirely devoted to her."

"That's more than good to know."

"I mean, though his studies haven't suffered, it's all I can do sometimes to get his mind off her & onto work. They might as well be married ..... Speaking of which ....."

"There's still another 3 1/2 years of college to go," she cautioned.

"Yeah, So ..... have you kicked yourself for not having introduced her to someone much sooner?"

"Oh ..... maybe ..... maybe ..... But then," Sakaki moved in even closer, their faces not even an inch distant, "I wouldn't have met you."

Azumanga Daioh X Peanuts, Some Ruminations

A "crossover" of sorts. The Azumanga Daioh bunch drawn in the style of
the Black Lagoon anime. Sorta kinda what Charles Addams would have
done had he been Japanese.

                                            Azumanga Daioh X Peanuts

                                                 Some Ruminations

                                                             by

                                                                 Jay Agan

While spending a Saturday afternoon at Armagedicon 6/Anime Punch last April, I spent too much time at the Aardvarktees booth watching You Tube anime spoofs. The majority of them parodies of Azumanga Daioh. The semi-demented proprietor of Aardvarktees, Weatherly Hardy, remarked that Azumanga Daioh was what Charles Schulz would have done had he been Japanese (Or was it that Peanuts was what Kiyohiko Azuma would have done had he been American? Oh well.). That thought had occured to me off & on as well.

Charles Schulz & his creations were well into "slice of life" way long before the term was even invented. With his alter ego, Charlie Brown, he explored the everday world through the eyes of his child characters giving not only laughs, but also insight into how the world & human nature interact. At times biting & even harsh, other times thoughtful or comedic. Always having one nodding ones head in knowing aknowledgement.

It is through the characters of both works that we see the goings on of the workings of the world. It is where I have drawn a few parallels between the two franchises (I left out Yukari & Minamo as they are older versions of Tomo & Yomi respectively. The less said of  Kimura the better.).

1. Sakaki/Charlie Brown- Withdrawn, shy, at times indecisive. Things don't always go well. Both have hang-ups & passions/obsessions that lead to distraction. Cats don't like Sakaki. Charlie can't keep a kite in the air to save his life.

2. Tomo Takino/Lucy van Pelt- The seven deadly sins & then some. Meanace to one & all. Personal motto: "Head games r' fun!" Viscious, nasty, mean, cruel, spiteful, bullying, LOUD, manipulative, offensive, insulting, & at times violent. Oh yes, rotten. Insert any other negative adjective here.

3. Chiyo-chan Mihama/Linus van Pelt- Incredibly smart & insightful though quite naive. Easily manipulated off onto tangents & can be quite emotional. Both have their "refuges": Linus has his security blanket. Chiyo her detatchable pigtails (YES! It's true! They ARE detatchable. We've all seen it. Just ask Osaka. She sees every {any} thing!).

4. Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara/Schroeder- Contientious, studious, considerate, patient, but both have their limits. Schroeder retaliates with his piano. Yomi lashes out with an uppercut to the jaw.

5. Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga- In her own little world (It's OK. They know her there.). Depending on what she's doing, dreaming, saying or thinking(?), she could easily be either Snoopy or (Philosophically speaking.) Pigpen.

6. Kaorin/Woodstock- A couple of messed up little birds. She has anxiety attacks & hyperventalates. He twitters & flitters.

7. Kagura/Peppermint Patty- Outgoing, friendly, energetic, & athletic. Optimistic & encouraging though bewildered by the dejection of others. Particularly of Sakakis' "otherness" or Charlies' indecisiveness.

Peanuts as teens anime style. L-R Lucy van Pelt, Linus van Pelt,
Charlie Brown.

You can probably come up with some comparisons of your own. Have fun.

Azumanga Daioh: Well THAT Was Dumb

Don't know what ad this is a parody of. Also didn't know Minamo & Yomi were
"Stoners". L-R: Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga, Chiyo-chan Mihama, Kagura, Sakaki,
Kaorin, Yukari Tanizaki, Minamo Kurosawa, Tomo Takino, Koyomi "Yomi"

No. Not the show. What I did.

I like Azumanga Daioh. Cute. Funny. Sometimes simple. Other times sophisticated. It doesn't try to offend or insult your intelligence (Eg. Upskirt shots of underage characters every five minutes, etc.). It was one of the first of the post 90s "schoolgirl" genre & undoubtedly the best. As it's not my usual kind of anime, I had initial misgivings when I first You Tubed it, but then left by episode three. I like it enough to own but not enough to shell out the bucks for new DVDs.

While browsing at the Bethel Rd. Half Price Books (Columbus, Ohio), I came across disc 3 in the series (Sakaki cover) & snapped it up. Two weeks later, I found discs 1-3 at Half Prices' Reynoldsburg store. The covers (Pre-opening "jump ups" before the opening credits.) didn't "match" the previous #3. As I didn't want to "break" the set, I bought all three, leaving me with an extra # 3.

Almost a month later, I'm "leafing" through the clear plastic cases & examining the extra info/illustrations on the other side of the slip covers (Nothing like little extras to make something more than complete.). Funny how the "inside" of disc 3 looks like the outside of .....

Well THAT was dumb. In any event, the local colleges' anime club is getting a freebie this fall.

Azumanga Daioh, the Abridged Series An Episodic Review

                                       Azumanga Daioh, the Abridged Series

                                                     An Episodic Review

                                                                  by

                                                                     Jay Agan

This is a short (5 eps), sweet (Each less than 5 minutes.) little parody that got more than a few laffs out of me. Azumanga Daioh screams Parody Me! & there are more than a ton of them on You Tube. This has to be one of the best.

      1. Day One- We're introduced to the main characters. High points:

Chiyo: "I'm supposed to tell you I'm a prodigy student but lying makes me feel bad inside."

We find Osakas' original nick-name was Xanax at her old school because of episodic reactions. Tomo promises her quite a hazing in the next ep.

      Tomo: "Kill ya tomorrow newbie!"

Osaka: "The more things change, ..... the more they suck!"

      2. Initiation- Osaka tries to concentrate on avoiding "that hyperactive girl" but is distracted by the posterior of a male student at the blackboard ("Oooo! Osaka likeee!"). Tomo & the others finally latch onto her &: Cafeteria food (Barf!), motor skills (fail), chugging (More barf!), & the old standby, beatings.

Sakaki: "Oh! You guys started without me. Thanks a friggin' lot!"

Osaka: "If it makes you feel any better, they haven't broken my spirit! My chest plate maybe ..... but not my spirit!"

Yomi: "I admit. I thought you'd lose conciousness or start crying like a baby ..... like the ten year old."

Osaka realizes they did it out of love & "..... for everything you've done to me, I promise ..... REVENGE!"

      3. Spending Time Wasted- Chiyo explains her wealth comes from a school tax exemption. Yukari starts a fire at school so she can leave work early & get drunk.

Minamo: "..... stop dancing in front of children like that. It's disgraceful!"

Chiyo: "You can start pole dancing for all I care. Just let me go back to my old school!"

      4. Master Plan- Chiyo attempts to drown Yukari. The kids find out Kimura's a pedo & plot to land him in jail but he "buys them off".

Chiyo: "I'm sure glad I'm not you girls. There's no way he'd be interested in someone my age ..... right?" (Just goes to show, being a genius doesn't necessarily mean you're smart!)

Tomo: "Yomi, you've compromised our safety for the next three years. But this ice cream is pretty good."

Yomi: "Yeah. I'd say it was an even trade."

      5. Excursion- Instead of going to Sea World, the teachers decide to accompany the kids to Chiyos' summer home instead. Chiyos' little monologue on how she spends her wealth & spare time is a hoot & and a half.

Yukari: "Who wants to ride with their favorite teacher?"

Osaka: "The scent of death is on this car ..... It's fresh!"

Osaka: "She tries to play on a Game Boy! While drivin'!"

There are too many more yucks n' chuckles in this last ep so I'll leave them to you to experience.

Chiyo: "Osaka tried to kill me with a firecracker! I wanna go home!"

Upcoming Animes. Well, Not Really Part 3

Upcoming Animes. Well, Not Really Part 3

                                                                  by

                                                                     Jay Agan

It won't be 10 more this time as I've run out of ideas. Maybe in about a year I'll come up with more. Here goes.

      1. The Tribulation of Haruhi Suzumiya- Out of sheer frustration/cynicism & pique, Kyon tries another attempt at telling Haruhi the truth about herself. This time she believes him! He then notices a Bible on her desk bookmarked halfway through Revelation. Oops!

Guess we now know who she really is.

      2. Great Teacher Kimura- Yes! He's back! That whacky sicko from Azumanga Daioh! Stalking his way into the hearts of millions &, as usual, is about as funny as a ..... well, a child molester. Belly laughs & gutbusters aplenty over his creepy antics as Minamo & novice science teacher Kaorin, stand between him & the kids.

      3. The Girl Who Schlepped Through Time- She loved her Bat Mitzvah. But it wasn't quite as good as she liked. So.....

      4. Beau Geste & The Secret of Blue Water- The Geste brothers, finding the legendary jewel, the Blue Water, has been stolen, join the Foriegn Legion to avoid disgrace. The sadistic Sargeant Markoff plots to get it. While posted at Fort Zinderneuf a group of jewel thieves, a young frenchman, & a young Kenyan circus performer (who has the jewel) end up there as well, having been pursued by a force of Neo-Atlanteans disguised as Arab raiders. Gary Cooper & Brian Donlevy never had it so bad!

      5. Sailor Quarter/Full Moon- Serena & friends still on the job protecting Crystal Tokyo ..... & coping with eating disorders.

      6. The Attack of the Angst Stricken Giant Magical Robot Vampire Princess Schoolgirl- 90% of the anime you'll ever watch. In one movie.

      7. The Asassination of Haruhi Suzumiya- One of the "factions" involved in the SOS Brigade comes to the descision of putting a stop to all the nonsense. Whose is it? Mikurus'? Itsukes'? Yuki maybe? Then again, Kyon could be pretty much fed up with the whole thing right about now. Tune in & find out!

      8. Bridge On the River Kawai- British POWs are forced to build an absolutly cute little bridge over a stunningly charming river for the Japanese military. The POWs' commanding officer goes mindnumbingly yandere over the idea. Later in the show, commandoes blow up the adorable structure just as a totally moe little choo choo crosses over &..........

Krap! I said I was running out of ideas & this proves it! I'm almost embarrassed to print this. Aw..... what the heck! I'm hitting the button.

Azumanga Daioh: Where Are They Now?

Azumanga Daioh: Where Are They Now?

by

C V Ford

It's been a some time since the Azumanga Daioh kids graduated from high school. Here's some "speculation" on where they & others are at.

Chiyo Mihama - Actually did study abroad. After graduating from M.I.T. at age 18 & post grad, she was employed in several joint Japanese/U.S. projects at the Lawrence Livermore Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasedena, Calif. Now works as an assistant tech advisor/systems analyst for an unspecified Japanese govt. think tank.

Sakaki - Married (Not to Kaorin.) & has her own successful veterinary practice in Tokyo. Relatives, friends & other investors were able to buy the former Gold Animal Clinic at govt. auction after its former owner mysteriously disappeared.

Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara - In house dietician at a large Japanese based corporation.

Tomo Takino - Pursued a career in law enforcement. Policewoman & assistant liason between ICPO (Interpol) & Japans' Nat. Police Agency. Has recieved several commendations in regard to the energetic pursuit of her duties.

Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga - Was a teacher for a while but later became a writer of several best selling childrens' books. "My Best Friends' Father" was on the New York Times best seller list for almost three years running.

Kagura - After winning two gold and a silver in the Olympic swimming competitions, she is now an athletics coach at Waseda University.

Kaorin - Before high school graduation, she tried to avail herself of an "internet service" of a one Ai Enma in regard to a "problem" she was having with a certain teacher. She balked at the price of the "service" & decided to tough it out. After recieving a degree in teaching, she became a science teacher at her old high school.

Minamo Kurosawa - Happily married with two kids. Now an in house physical therapist at the same corporation Yomi works at.

Yukari Tanizaki - Surprisingly enough, is also married & has a son. Met her future husband while exchanging car insurance info (Believe it or not, the accident was his fault, not hers!). Even more surprising, she is now Assistant Principle at the school. Though her driving habits have drastically mellowed, her style of teaching has not.

Kimura - One of Tomos' first "collars". Was to be tried on evidence/testimony supplied by Kaorin-sensei & several students. Adjudged mentally incompetant to stand trial. Now resides at a prefectural mental institution.

Maya - Getting on in years but still rules the roost at the vet. clinic.

Kamineko - Evil lives on forever.

Mr. Tadakichi - Gone but not forgotten. Though she has a pup sired by him, Chiyo-chan dearly misses him.

                                                                   Jay Agan

One of the shows I've put off bothering with (Not my kind of anime.) is Azumanga Daioh. On glancing at articles & seeing illustrations in passing, I concluded it was another of those insufferably cute shows for girls. Having just aquired hi-speed internet & nothing better to do, I decided to take this one in. Glad I did.

The show is about several young women going through grades 10-12 & the situations (surreal & otherwise.) they encounter. Summer/winter semesters with their attendant classes, sports/culture fests, holidays/vacations & general "slice of life" high school experience. This story arc is repeated for each grade. While one might think this to be boring, there is more than enough variation keeping this series interesting throughout. The characters themselves keep things moving, lively &, at times, have you busting a gut laughing.

The "cast" members are stories unto themselves:

Excrutiatingly cute child prodigy, Chiyo Mihama: Top scholar in class but still with the mind of a child. Doing her best socializing with classmates five years older. Her "cooking is so fun" segment from episode one almost had me calling the EMS over what I feared was a sugar OD. This seemed to innoculate me for the rest of the series so I was able to continue.

Remote, alienated Sakaki: Taller than most of the boys at school & quite self concious of it. Everyone misreads her detatchment as "being cool". Oh yes. She wants a kitty.....so.....bad (Can't have one. Parent allergies.). Cats don't seem to like her much. One in particular almost always puts the bite on her when she tries to pet it. You'd think it would occure to her the critter might be rabid.

Sadistic, hyperactive, ritalin deprived, Tomo Takino: I'm against drugging children to make them compliant in school, but in this case, maybe they should put this one to sleep! LOUD (!) with a capitol loud & always roughhousing or ranking on someone (Usually Yomi.). Also likes messing with Chiyos' mind. ("Okinawa! OH KIN AH WAA!" "Oh! Shut up!")

Studious, sensible, weight concious, Kayomi "Yomi" Mizuhara: A stabilising force in the group. Good for giving an occasional sock to the jaw of the hyperactive one. In spite of her exasperation with Tomo, they're actually good friends.

Athletic go-getter Kagura: In a one sided sports/coolness competition with Sakaki. Not above participating in some of Tomos' stunts.

Spacey, other worldly, Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga: Originally from (Where else?) Osaka. Her mind, from somewhere beyond there.

Whacked language teacher, Yukari Tanizaki: You'd think she was related to Tomo, the way she acts. Likes playing head games with everyone. Her teaching "style" is unique to say the least. Also drives like a freakin' maniac!

Caring, attentive, phys-ed teacher Minamo Kurosawa: Another stabilising force & guardian of the kids, standing between them an a certain "strange" litt. teacher.

Obsessive, lesbian wannabe, Kaorin: Has a crush on Sakaki (Who is either oblivious or just very good at ignoring it.). Constantly "beating herself over the head" about it. (Geez kid. Get a boyfriend or three. Find out what it's like on the "other bank of the river".)

Unsuccessful pedophile, litt. teacher Kimura: This guy needs to be locked up! As the kids know what he is from the start & avoid him like the plague, the character is played for laughs. I had to keep reminding myself that Japanese humor is a little.....uh.....different.

The latter two characters would pretty much keep this show off saturday mornings here & on Adult Swim. I admit, I laughed my butt off over some of the situations they were in. Howsomever, the scenes of Kimura focusing his attention on Kaorin are creepy to say the least. (Is it any wonder the kid is such an emotional basket case at times?)

While not rushing out to buy the show (Again, not my kind of anime.), I must say I enjoyed watching it & even got a little sad when it concluded. It is, with some reservations, I recommend it to an older crowd.

So. Do Kaorins' dreams come true? (Oh for cryin' out loud!) Does Kimura Score? (Good Lord! No!) Do the kids graduate let alone pass their college entrance exams? And, most importantly, does Sakaki finally reconcile with the little, gray, piranha kitty? (This is what had me follow this series to the end.) See the series & find out!

Addendum: Some months after I wrote this article, I "broke down" & bought this series. Why? It's cute, funny, simple yet sophisticated & doesn't try to insult ones' intelligence. The only bad thing about this series is the ending. You DON'T want it to end (The graduation scene is a minor tear jerker!). The only recourse is to start the show over. Rats!
