How ..... How DARE he .....! The Offending of Haruhi Suzumiya

How ..... How DARE he .....! The Offending of Haruhi Suzumiya

                                                              by

                                                                  Jay Agan

A week or three ago, an aquaintance on a not to be mentioned blog was waxing rhapsodic over My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (He watches it with his children. I'm not sure wether or not he would be caught dead watching by himself I KNOW I wouldn't.) In the spirit of good natured ribbing, I chided him with a reply to his post: A faux mini-rant on hypoglycemic cuteness & vomitability. He actually had the temerity to reply to my reply.

This also was in his blog post.

He explained the present reinvention of MLP was miles ahead of its' 80s incarnation & perhaps I might give it a try (He also asked why I hated sunshine & if I was a servant of darkness! He got one out of two. Big deal!). Hmmph! In a later blogpost he embedded a youtube segment of the show & from that I would say it does seem better than the sickly sweetness of the past. Oooo ..... Kaaay. Howsomever .....

An "anthromorph" of the Applejack character from the My
Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! series. Hmm. If the show was
more like this I might watch it! Cider! Cider! Cider! Cider!

He then ends his reply-reply with: "I mean, you watch Haruhi Suzumiya...."  *grin*

      Well!

How ..... how ..... Dare he. How dare he even think of comparing the wonder of the greatest anime ever to the insipid drivil of MLP? How can he just callously plunk the most awesome show in the universe next to the sickening sacharinity (If that wasn't a word before, it is now!) of that tawdry little toon? I ask you, what kind of twisted logic could come up with such unfathomable reasoning? It .... it's ..... beyond mind boggling. And believe you me, I'm as boggled as they come!

Now that I've given my obligatory (And enthusiastic!) defense of the Goddess, I'll now address something else: That last statement of his reply-reply seemed to imply something. Something others have murmurred under their breath for quite some time. Some folks may be thinking I harbor some kind of unhealthy obsession with The Melancholy of  Haruhi Suzumiya.

      NOTHING ..... COULD ..... BE ..... FURTHER ..... FROM ..... THE ..... TRUTH .....

Yes, the theological whackness is one of the things that attracted me to the show (Think of it as sorta kinda a lighter hearted Serial Experiments Lain.).

The convolutedness of the various episode orders make for interesting viewings (Is that a "stand alone" episode or ..... something else?).

The conspiritorial (Implied or other wise.) "wheels within wheels" agendas of the various character/factions involved.

The gradual descent into Hitchcockian madness, Stroheimlike darkness & noir of Endless Eight.

Yes, I do have both seasons of the show.

And The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film.

I also have all the episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi-CHAN Suzumiya.

Along with the Nyoron! Churuya-san eps. But mind you, that's only because they came with the previous mentioned.

I have even downloaded the light novels. I have read each one ONLY about five times each (So don't anyone think I have nothing better to do. And when I find the time I'll do it.).

I would also like to state that that my VERY MILD (!) enthusiasm has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL to do with the fact that the title character bears a superficial resemblance to a fondly remembered girlfriend from long ago (We were both in our early twenties so don't get any ideas.). This was the young lady who "attacked" & severly injured me at a showing of Phantasm in the late seventies.

Looked like Haruhi, & had the personality of Yuki. Except when she'd get emotional. Then she was like Mikuru on Sunoco Blue. I miss her. As the song goes, "You don't know what you got til it's gone". Well ..... when you're young & stupid .....

      Ahem!

If I were a toon, this would be my belief system.

So one could hardly say I'm actually FIXATED on this show. Mildly amused by it? Sure. But OBSESSED!? Nawwww! No way! I mean ..... after all ..... it's only a cartoon ..... right? RIGHT!?

Be that as it may, I'm not interested in ordinary people. But if any of you happen to be aliens, time travelers or espers, please come see me.

      That is all.

      OOPS!

Hey Haruhi Suzumiya Fans! Check These Out!

Suddenly ..... Haruhis! Lots of 'em!
Oh for the love of .....! As if one wasn't enough!

Hey Haruhi Suzumiya Fans! Check These Out!

Was stooging around YouTube when I stumbled across THIS. This "parody sub" uses the ENOZ "concert" scene from episode 12, "Live Alive" from The Melancholy of  Haruhi Suzumiya. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on, & when I did, I actually hurt my guts I was laughing so hard! The "matching" of Japanese "word sounds" to actual English words came out absolutely hilarious! Nonsensical phrases having nothing at all to do with one another ........... crazy! I wonder if there are other "parody subs" out there. CORN SALAD!

Try The Freakingness of Haruhi Suzumiya 1 here. "Old timers" will recognize the "voice" & get a kick out of the segment at about 3:44. It never occured to me that would be the perfect laugh for Tsuruya.

The Freakingness of Haruhi Sumiya 2 here, is also a hoot 'n a half.

Warning: Strong language in some segments. Have the kiddies leave the room.

      Yes. Itsuke still likes trains.

A recovering Kyon with two sets of the cast from the differing realities. Clockwise

I swore when I started out getting anime to round out my vid collection I would never get into what I term "pedo" shows. There's a substratum in anime fandom with a bad rep & for good reason. Why anyone would be "attracted" to underaged girls (And "toons" at that!) & be so open about it is beyond me (I am not counting, of course, underaged fans. It's these "neckbeards" giving me the creeps.).

Besides, why would I be watching ANY of these "girly" little shows? MEN! (With a capital MEN!) Are into manly things. Sci-fi, horror, action/adventure etc. What need have MEN for these "poofy" little cartoons?

Over time I was getting & watching some of them anyway. I YouTubed some on the recommendation of others & found a few interesting.

The Peanuts-like "straight 'n simple" approach/humor of Azumanga Daioh. The satire of Lucky Star. A sci-fi with X-Files element sendup of Stratos 4. The theological whackness of Hell Girl, Angel Beats, Serial Experiments Lain or ..... The Melancholy of  Haruhi Suzumiya.

Which brings me to my latest aquisition: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

If you're familiar with the Haruhi series, you already know about the convoluted strangeness of what appears on the surface to be another of those silly schoogirl series. Interesting twists/turns & anomalies make this franchise more than fascinating. The ongoing story of an unknowingly god-like being & her four friends making sure she stays that way & the damage control following. So far, the franchise has been generally lighthearted but Disappearance takes a more noirish turn.

Kyon, the main protagonist, wakes up one cold December day in an alternate reality. Is it the same world altered or a completely different one? He's not sure but what is sure is Haruhi (Whack goddess of all creation.) is nowhere to be found. Or is she?

It's up to Kyon to find/figure a way out of this mess & the cause. Find them both he does. Gathering the "keys" (I'm not going to spoil it for you.) & the cause (Wish fulfillment on his part? Someone else tired/fed-up with Haruhis' chaos inducing madness?) he solves the problem only to find a new one (Caused by a "returning" menace.) which solution is delayed for a time at the conclusion of the picture. Thus opening the way for a continuation of the series/movies. I hope.

The "gang of five" back together again & some alternate protagonists sadly
exiting stage right. L-R: Haruhi Suzumiya, Mikuru Asahina, Yuki Nagato,
Itsuke Koizume, Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Itsuke Koizume, Haruhi Suzumiya.

Warning: This film is about two & a half hours long. Think of it as five back to back Haruhi eps. It helps if youv'e read the light novel of the same name (#4) beforehand. Or for that matter seen the series, eps 1-6 (Ep. 5, DVD order, in particular. Also ep. 8 "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody", 2009 order.).

From the "fish out of water" first half to the sci-fi noir of the second, you'll find this both enjoyable & more than slightly mind bent.
