Full Metal Alchemist: A Reasessment

Alphonse, Courage the cowardly dog, Eagle the not so chicken chicken and
Edward take a rest by the yellowbrick road on their way to the Emerald City.
Just kidding.

Full Metal Alchemist: A Reasessment

For years I've been avoiding this one. I now find I may have made a mistake.

I usually don't go in for "magic" anime. Yeah, God don't like the occult and I never did care for magic being used as a shortcut/plot device/crutch.

You know the drill:

"So wadaya' make of it doc?"

"Magic!"

"Say What!?"

And the story/plot goes merrily on its' way leaving me ticked off about plot holes and scriptwriter laziness.

And what's up with that symbol? Kinda like Blue Oyster Cults'.

Well, I was downtown in the bustling metropolis of Delaware, Ohio the other day when I decided to stop at Gameplay. Not into vid games, I usually go there to check out their DVD movie rack. There I found the first four episode disc to Full Metal Alchemist.

Folks had been telling me for the longest time to check it out and hey, $3.99 used? OK!

I learned my lesson from Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Oh! It really ISN'T Sailor Moon! Now if Aniplex U.S.A. would market it right and put it in a box set instead of three episode singles at thirty plus bucks a pop, I'd get it in a New Jersey minute.).

The story is about the Elric brothers, Darwin and Dudley ... er, uh ... Edward and Alphonse (After the colossal boner that got them in their predicament and on their journey, you'd call them that too!) and their quest to find Alchemys' fabled "Philosophers' Stone" to correct the results of aforementioned misadventure.

From what I've seen so far, the "Dragon Ball Z" and "Sailor Moon" aren't overplayed. It was the "hook" that got me. The "laws" of reciprocity and equivalent exchange are at the forefront from the start. Being something of a Randroid, that appeals to me.

Shoot. If someone told me this was a more action oriented Spice and Wolf of sorts, I'd have got it long ago.

I do wonder if they go into the principle of entropy later. Where something may not be worth the price you're paying. Examples: Physically, a DVD only costs 35-40 cents to make yet you pay many times that (The content jacks the price up.). Or, no matter how much your paycheck, you're never going to be able to buy back even one second of the time you spent at work.

As it is, I'm going to get this one ...

Fool Me Twice ... Darkness Descends

Darkness descends.

Fool Me Twice ... Darkness Descends

To all this does concern;

Last night, I saw the United States put an official stamp on its' headlong rush to suicide. I had already noted its' death wish through the years in the promotion/sanction of collectivism, feminism, abortion & homosexuality, things most destructive to a nation. Now, with the re-election of Obama something new has been added.

Last night, the parasites & their allies came out of the woodwork in droves & outvoted us. There are now more of THEM than there are of us. The "something for nothing" crowd now has a greater understanding that they can get anything they want at the expense of the productive. The politicians, both left & right, will make note of this & act accordingly to eventually accomodate them as much as possible. A great socialist dark age is about to descend.

I had hopes for my own future. I was hoping when the economy improved I could go back to a voice acting career. A career that was yanked out from under me when, 16 months into the presidents' first term, I was informed by my agent that my contract would not be renewed due to the bad economy. I bided my time in hopes things would improve. A good start would have been in the ousting of Obama & repairing the damage caused.

Now that I see real economic recovery to be impossible (The forced health care insurance racket to be foisted upon one & all will help not in the least.) I have decided to forego an acting career. Even if I restarted & was successful It would only put me in a higher tax bracket. I have no desire to contribute anything more to what I feel is a country bent on killing itself & taking me with it. As a character in Ayn Rands' novel, Atlas Shrugged said: "I don't care to be the cannibals' lunch & do the cooking as well."

I'm a janitor now & probably retire as one. Instead of having my dreams on hold, I will now hang them up for good. I plan on contributing as little as possible to "the community", society, or whatever it is they call that vague, collective hive mind. I withhold any talent or goodness I might have given to the world. To better myself would mean I would only be punished (taxed) more for whatever they deem to be a "fair share" (Subject to change anytime someone behind a desk thinks it's not "fair" enough & increase it.).

As it contributes nothing to "their scene", I will continue with this blog as a creative outlet for myself.

To those who have voted to cut the nations' throat, congratulations. Enjoy it while you can. I optimistically give it ten, maybe fifteen years before the consequences of your actions become more than apparent. As you make more & more demands upon the productive, the less you will get as the incentive for creators, inovators, job providers & working people to better themselves will be diminished. The grab bag of free goodies will eventually be empty, the goose laying the golden eggs will be dead. The party will be over.

To those who voted for the president the SECOND time wether it was out of "idealism" or the belief it was for the "good" ...

There is an old saying: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

The shame will be very much on you though I doubt you have the wit to feel it. The smarter among you may eventually find your fanciful ideologies & good intentions to be of little use/compensation in the years of darkness to follow.

The unfortunate thing is we will ALL get what you deserve. In your haste to bring about your dream of a better tomorrow, we will all be dragged through what will become a nightmare.

To those who voted otherwise. To the makers of real material wealth. To the inventors & innovators. To the creative & artistic among you. To the adventurous & seeking. To the working man & maintainer:

It was good while it lasted. I am sad to see this country go.

May God bless you all. For we are about to descend into hell.

yours,

Jay Agan

Interesting Search Words #21

Interesting Search Words #21

More strange little web searches from strange little web people.

1. anne frank hentai - What the ...! Are you ... you gotta be ... ... GET OUTTA HERE!

2. atlas shrugged vs lord of the rings - Barack Obama. It's like having Gollum for president.

John Galt & a Taggart Transcontinental locomotive.
Credit: James Climer, Climercomics.

3. what does trololo mean - Here's your trololo right here!

4. rei ayanami creepy - Creepy ... yes. But not half as creepy as Kaworu.

Yeah ... She's creepy alright!

5. sailor moon drunk - We've all seen that one. I'd rather put in a nice iconic shot of the group of five.

Sailor Moon. A classic example of excellent character design carrying what
otherwise is an abysmal show. DBZ for girls & thus prettier to look at. And,
unfortunately, has been a staple of hentai knockoffs for over two decades.

6. sick shinji - Yes! Sick, sick, SICK Shinji.

Shinji Ikari. President of the Tokyo 3 chapter of the
Edward D. Wood Jr. Fan Club. Maybe it's because he
feels closer to Asuka when he wears her stuff.

7. ayn rand swimsuit - That's almost as bad as Anne Frank hentai. As an objectivist, I OBJECT!

8. giant naked rei - Much better than 1, 6 & 7 and certainly better than a giant naked Kaworu. Possibly the creepiest scene in End of Evangelion.

Third Impact would be a lot more fun if it was Haruhi.
She IS God after all.

That's it for now. Things have slowed down DRASTICALLY blog traffic wise the last couple days. Either due to the elections (Get out there & VOTE!) or perhaps the shine has been taken off the apple of the Darn That Bill! article (Now over 47,000 hits on that one!). Hopefully things will pick up later, probably after November 6. Will still try to get Interesting Search Words #22 out before then & of course get two articles on this blog per week ... See ya'll later.

Interesting Search Words #20

Interesting Search Words #20

Yes! The 20th installment of a series guaranteed to get me more hits (Because I am getting hits.) on my not so humble blog. With 20+ more to go. And so ...

1. haruhi suzumiya gods can't die - Of course not. And keep in mind ...

It's all in her hands.

2. ayn rand is the devil - Only to Democrats & too many Republicans.

Yup! Pure dead bang evil ...

3. haruhi suzumiya no hips - Really? You sure about that?

Poor, skinny, anorexic, undernourished, wretched little thing ... Yeah! Right!

4. chastity hentai - There is such a thing?

Translation: I've seen enough hentai
to know where this is going.

5. haruhi suzumiya evil smile - Now how can THAT be? How about an all knowing smirk instead?

6. atlas shrugged & lord of the rings - Truely, we are trapped in Mordor.

Ever notice, when discussing (ie.: argueing) anything weighty with someone, they usually rely on: cliches, mantras, chants, out of context bible quotes, threats, ad hominem attacks & ... noise? Logic? Reason? Just what the heck are those? There are times I can't help but think I'm a minor protagonist in an Ayn Rand novel that never ends. I swear! If Jesus doesn't come soon, rapture or no rapture (Probably not!), I'd be willing to settle for an alien invasion! Or getting tanged ... whatever ...

7. bleach my little pony - Methinks this pony thing has gone far enough.

Perhaps even a bit on the creepy side.

8. women at work hentai - Uh ... just what kind of work are these women into?

9. sick shinji - Other than THAT SCENE in End of Evangelion, I would say he's more on the hapless & dumb side. Like someone else we know.

Hapless & dumb. Nothing ... but ... abuse.

And so ends this exciting "episode" of Interesting Search Words. Next installment's gonna take a while. Seems such search words from y'all are fewer & farther between. Til then ...

The Vulture

Pretty much illustrates what I saw that day.

                                                     The Vulture

                                                             by

                                                                Jay Agan

Back in the 70s, for about a period of four years, Mt. Vernon was without an indoor movie theater. No big deal I guess, just go to the next town if you wanted to take in a flick. Trouble was, the "next" town was Newark, Columbus or if you lived in northern Knox County, Mansfield, 25+ miles away.

During the warm months there was the Knox Auto Theater (Now sadly gone.) but until the Colonial started operations downtown (They scored The Empire Strikes Back as their opener. How they did it, I've no idea.), you were hit with a trip mid-Fall through early Spring.

As an objectivist (Small o. I don't believe EVERYTHING Ayn Rand says. Only 99.99%.) I really can't fault the former owner of the Vernon Theater. A bank wanted the property, cable TV was cutting into ticket sales & the place needed repair. So the old man sold it. O ..... K ..... I guess.

Sentiment. What kind of a price do you put on it? (In Delaware County, it's 150 grand taxpayer bucks to restore the Strand.) I mean, I spent many an afternoon matinee at the Vernon. Mom & Dad Disneyed us to death there. I remember Dad bothered by three bucks a head when we saw Patton. There was the Romeo & Juliet controversy (Zeffirelli version. Didn't bother me. I'm not turned on by guys butts.). It was at the Vernon I was traumatized by Old Yeller. I was further traumatized on my first date there. Memories .....

My last memory of the Vernon is not a good one. I was on my way to Brinings' News Stand (Down the alley & across Vine.) passing the skeletal carcass of the torn down theater. There, standing in the midst of the wreckage, was ..... HIM!

Clad in a BLACK business suit & contrasting white shirt. Hunched shoulders, arms extended & clutched in the liver spotted leprousness of his talons ..... window glass. The elderly scavenger was salvaging window glass! Looking ..... for all the world ..... like some foul carrion bird ..... picking at road kill.

That glass is probably laying in some barn or shed collecting about as much dust as he is. Sad.

Atlas Shrugged Part 1: Bad Because It's Good

Atlas Shrugged Part 1: Bad Because It's Good

                                                               by

                                                                   Jay Agan

The critics didn't like it (If Roger Ebert doesn't like a movie, chances are I will.). The left, of course, hated it. The establishment "elitist" right (There's nothing elite about these nonentities.) such as the hack P.J. O'Rourke, blew it off. This made me do something I haven't done in years. I went to the theater.

One nonsuch in The Other Paper (A local "alternative" rag in Columbus, Ohio.) put it down as low budget. Of course it was low budget! If this film got any real support from the Hollywood establishment, I would have suspected something wrong & wouldn't have bothered to see it.

When this comes out on disc, I have every intention of getting it. If the other two parts are made they may be straight to disc due to the poor box office showing. I'll get those too. If they're as faithful to the book as this one they'll be well worth the getting.

Atlas Shrugged Part 1 is as hard hitting & non-compromising as Ayn Rands' book. Parasites, hacks & mediocraties (Like the ones listed earlier.) are a drag on the rational, constructive, & creative people who are the real builders & maintainers of civilisation. The book opened my eyes to a lot of things in life, one of which is to not needlessly fear the mob of  lesser beings who populate the halls of media, academia, & government.

My realisation of the above, came to a culmination one day when I was out for a walk along the railroad tracks that ran past my then apartment. I was fretting over what the "enlightened ones" in Washington had planned after the 1998 elections. I wasn't paying attention when I was shocked out of my contemplation by a locomotive air horn (The large diesels have a low pulsing sound to them. When coming from a distance it's a slow "build up" thus a train can "sneak" up on you.).

A big GE locomotive was less than 100 yds away & I jumped off to watch it pass. As it rumbled by I couldn't help but notice how long the train was. Way over a mile. It then struck me. The engineer was doing something more useful, more productive, than that army of politicians in government could do in their entire lives combined! Also I noticed the raw power of that pair of locomotives pulling that huge cut of rolling stock. Let's see a politician(s) do that! Let's see them actually accomplish something real & useful. Shoot! Let's see them do an honest days' work at making a real living. I'm not afraid of them any more.

I thought further. The unknown innovator who came up with the concept of the helical screw (& thus made possible such marvels as that locomotive.) did more for mankind (& himself!) than all the Schumers, Doles, Obamas, Boehners, etc., since time immemorial, ever could in their wildest  dreams  (The real future doesn't lie with them.).

I thought of the above as I watched the film. My emotions ran from sadness to exhilaration to wanting to get up & cheer as I saw ideal heroes overcoming not so ideal adversaries. There were parts I wanted to cry over as I saw one of the greatest novels come alive on the screen. Real heroes, doing real accomplishments, with a power that can't be found in any & all of the lofty schemes/good intentions of the predatory & well meaning. The power of self. The self that makes things happen & is the only real engine that moves the world. The self that can turn off the world if forced by others to do so.

Low budget, very limited release, almost no advertising/promotion & the hatred of many. My kind of film.

The Passion of  Ayn Rand: Man, This REALLY Creeps Me Out!

                                                                  by

                                                                     Jay Agan

I like Ayn Rands' works. I've a whole shelf of them. The Fountainhead is in my collection. I consider myself an Objectivist (Small "o". I don't believe that in order to be a true individual I have to do EVERYTHING Ayn Rand says.). I am pretty much an adherent of her philosophy.

It was with some interest that I snapped up a vhs tape of The Passion of Ayn Rand in a thrift shop a few years back. In spite of it being an "anti" Rand film, I enjoyed it & still do. Maybe she was horrid in person. She certainly had her faults. That only makes her more human to me.

Horrid or not. It doesn't take  any validity away from her belief system. Actually, very little of Rational Objectivism is original (Aristotle, et al.). Rand was just very good in codifying & laying it all out in an understandable manner.

Something, however, happened. A most startling revelation hit me while I was viewing the tape for the fourth or fifth time over a several month period. I wasn't looking for it. It hit me between the eyes totally without warning.

Many may disagree about Helen Mirrens' portrayal of Ms. Rand. I'm sure Peikoff & co. do. Wether or not Mirren accurately played the part of Ayn Rand or not, one thing is for sure: She was  certainly spot on with someone else.

While watching, it dawned on me: The facial expressions. The gestures. The voice.  The histrionics. The eyes! That ..... heavy ..... "Slavic" ..... accent.

"Oh my God!" I thought. "It's impossible! It can't be! But it's true!"

Could Helen Mirren & Lugosi be one &
the same? The mind boggles. I know I'm
boggled! credit: Universal Pictures.

He's back! Bela Lugosi is back!

Helen Mirren as Ayn Rand. If Lugosi had been a woman, this is what (s)he would have looked & sounded like! This was better than Martin Landaus' portrayal in Ed Wood (I was & still am pleased over his getting best supporting actor Oscar in '95.)!

Yes! He's back! More terrifying & chilling than ever! Don't miss ..... BELA LUGOSI! In ..... The Passion of Ayn Rand!

Humor In the Eye of the Non-Beholder

Humor In the Eye of the Non-Beholder

                                                                   by

                                                                      Jay Agan

I don't like "happy" people. Not only are they "happy" but they want you to be "happy" too. "Happy" for no particular reason. You've met them.

      "C'mon! Smile!" They say.

      "Why?" You answer.

      "Because!"

      "Because what?"

      "Just because!"

Irrational. If there's no cause then there's no because.

"Do you know it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile?" A favorite mantra of theirs. Your not smiling doesn't necessarily mean you're frowning. They mistake a relaxed face as a frown. Then again, they mistake a lot of things for unhappiness.

Ayn Rand stated to the effect that happiness is the positive emotion recieved through achieving something from following your own values. You have to be happy for a reason. Happiness for no reason is irrational, corrupt, chaotic. I worked in an institution for several years & encountered a lot of smiling, "happy" people.

Unlike most Randroids, if I'm feeling good for no reason I'm not going to hit the brakes & try to find a reason for it. I'll go with it. A little spontaneous irrationality can be fun. But to "consciously" drum up causless "happiness"? To feel good on command? Ridiculous! Reminds me of that Huckleberry Hound cartoon where as Robin Hood he exhorts his not so merry men to "Yuck it up!". They in turn go "Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!".

Those who insist on irrationally feeling good are the most unhappy of all. They aren't out to find happiness as much as they are looking for unhappiness to cure. If they can't find it they'll make it up.

Here's a fer instance. I was a cashier at an unmentionable merchandising chain (Not Wal-Mart by the way.) & met/collided with all sorts of people. As this place had a pharmacy this included some of the over/under medicated.

So I'm bantering with a customer about "Murphys Laws of Combat" (A set of bogus "rules" based on Murphys Law: If anything can go wrong, it will. At the worst possible moment.). A form of "black humor" (Laughing/contempt for death is a positive thing.) that's brought more than a chuckle or two to many (Friendly fire isn't, incoming has right of way, if the enemy is in range so are you, etc.).

While I'm checking the fellow out, the woman next in line couldn't help but hear & interjected, "Oooooooo! How negative! We should concentrate of positive things!"

How does one explain "black humor" (Or humor for that matter.) to a fanatic like that? How do you present anything as positive to one bound & determined to find negativity wherever/whenever, & if not find it, make it up? You can't.

In their quest to stamp out unhappiness they have become the very evil they fight. These humorless trolls see misery wherever they go wether it's there or not. In doing so they grasp at a causeless, artificial state of levity to counter the unhappiness, real or imagined, they have found & must drum it up constantly. In going after the devil, the devil has got them.

The Drexel North, A Place On High Street

The Drexel North, A Place On High Street

                                                                by

                                                                    Jay Agan

The Drexel North (Originally the Beechwold Theater then later the Camelot North.) was a "neighborhood" theater (One big screen.) that specialized in "alternative" films. Lesser knowns, foriegn, indies, etc.

I was somewhat apprehensive in initially attending. The usual crowd was not what one would call normal. Pancake makeup, eyeshadow/lipstick all the colors of the rainbow, spandex stockings, sheer mini-skirts, tight, TIGHT, leather jeans ..... And that was just the guys! OK, I exaggerate. However, they weren't the types you'd find at your local multiplex. In spite of their strange appearance, I've found the crowds at the Drexel North to be the most well behaved of audiences I've ever encountered. They were there to SEE the movies!

And such movies. Thanks to the Otani Film Fest I got to take in Seven Samurai & many another Kurosawa flick. Rands' We The Living. Various animation collections. Citizen Kane on the big screen! Even miscelaeneous "B" actioners from other countries. Akira rekindled a more than passing interest in anime.

I'll always fondly remember the 1990 24 hour Sci-Fi marathon. Couldn't sleep after that one. I was up 36 hours straight!

Sadly, the Drexel North is now a gym, its operations having been moved to Grandview. Studio 35 (On Indianola avenue.) seems to have taken its place in function in the area. Maybe I should check that one out.
